A report released on Thursday (06/10) by the Security Observatories Network points out that Rio de Janeiro’s police forces were responsible for 306 deaths between August 2021 and July 2022. The number is higher than the 281 deaths recorded jointly in other six states analyzed – Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Piauí and São Paulo. The report brings the results of a study carried out for the third consecutive year with the aim of increasing knowledge about violence and public safety.

01/10/2022 – A military police officer reacted to an attempted robbery in Madureira, in the North Zone. The PM, who was off duty, was approached the moment he arrived home. According to the Military Police, the criminals shot at him, who reacted. After the shooting, the officer approached a motorcycle suspected of having participated in the robbery and one of the occupants was arrested.
01/10/2022 – Criminals who practiced a mass robbery near Norte Shopping, in Cachambi, had a shooting with the police. According to the Military Police, a man ended up being shot and arrested. One of the stolen cars was recovered.
01/10/2022 – A shooting left one person injured in Leblon, in the South Zone. A doorman driving a motorcycle ran a red light and was followed by a military police officer. One of the officers tried to hit the motorcycle tire, but the shot hit the ground and then hit a woman in the back.
02/10/2022 – A man was shot dead at a gas station on Estrada do Mendanha, in Campo Grande, West Zone. According to the witness, he had gone to the convenience store when armed men arrived and shot him. Also, according to the witness, the criminals fled in a white car along Avenida Brasil.
02/10/2022 – A woman was stabbed in the parking lot of the Rio Sul Shopping Mall, in Botafogo, South Zone, during an attempted robbery. According to the establishment’s direction, the victim reacted and was stabbed by a man as she was getting into her own car. She suffered cuts to her hand, as well as injuries to her thigh and shin.
03/10/2022 – Intense shooting left two wounded. The shooting began after drug dealers from a rival faction, Morro da Pedreira, tried to take control of the drug trade in the Costa Barros region, in the North Zone.
03/10/2022 – The Military Police rescued the truck driver and the assistant who were taken along with the cargo in a robbery. They were transporting about two tons of cheese when they were approached by robbers close to the CCPL community, in Benfica, North Zone. The total load of cheese is valued at R$100,000. A man was arrested and a motorcycle was seized with him.
05/10/2022 – An actress died after being shot by criminals who tried to steal her car in Marechal Hermes, in the North Zone. Security cameras caught the moment when two thieves approached the 58-year-old victim. The bandits’ action lasted 6 seconds. The criminals were on Rua Costa Filho walking along the sidewalk when they saw the victim’s car, one of the criminals went to the middle of the street and stood in front of the car, but she did not stop the vehicle. He then shot twice towards the driver’s window and ran with his partner.
05/10/2022 – A military police officer was killed in an attack by criminals on Rua Leopoldo, in Andaraí, near Estrada Grajaú-Jacarepaguá, North Zone. The 42-year-old police officer was shot in the head when a criminal fired from a moving car at the police car where he was.
06/10/2022 – Six women were arrested for exploiting child labor in Leblon, Zona Sul. Minors, from toddlers to teenagers, were forced to sell candy, ask for money, food and diapers from people on the street. According to investigations by the Leblon Police Department, they were seated at a distance, while the minors were vulnerable, alone.
06/10/2022 – A shooting took place in Avenida Brasil central lane, near Manguinhos, North Zone, between military police officers from the Expressway Police Battalion (BPVE) and two men who were riding a motorcycle. According to information from the BPVE, the criminals were surprised by the presence of police officers when they tried to rob a driver who was passing along the avenue.
Our analysis:
The main roads of Rio de Janeiro are crossed by favelas where there is a large presence of criminals and therefore shootings are constant.
- If you are on the street – If you are on the street when a shooting starts, the tip is to immediately look for a pole, wall, concrete shelter in the nearest building or house. Avoid running away. Many people try to run during a shooting, when the ideal is to crawl to safety
- If you are in the car – According to the Federal Police, the car can be a good shelter option. The recommendation is to always stay low on the engine block part, as this is the place where there is more solid part. The axle part of the vehicle’s wheel is also a good place to take shelter
- If you are at home – The Federal Police recommends staying away from windows. If any of them are hit by a bullet, the broken glass can injure and even kill. Open spaces such as backyards and terraces should also be avoided. You should look for a space where you are separated by two brick walls from where the sound of gunfire is coming from. It is important to be lying with your whole body on the floor
- Leave curiosity aside. Only leave the shelter or approach the window when you are sure the danger is over. Never try to record a shooting scene on your cell phone.
06/10/2022 – Officers from the Railway Police Group (GPFer) and the Mangueira UPP arrested a man for ejaculating on a female passenger in a train car on the Japeri branch near Maracanã station, in the North Zone. According to the Military Police, officers from the Mangueira UPP were called to investigate a riot at the station. There, the police found the criminal being assaulted by the passengers themselves.
