01/01/2024 – Young man was found dead on the beach in the historical Vila of Mambucaba, West Angra. First elements of the investigation pointed he has been shot. Forensics have found no detail or document that could identify the victim and the reasons for his murder.

01/01/2024 – PM seized drugs in Bracuí, North of Angra. During a routine patrol, the officers noticed a man with a backpack. When this saw the police vehicle, he fled leaving his bag behind him. The officers opened the bag and discovered some drugs inside. The suspect has not been found.
02/01/2024 – In Morro do Santo Antônio, Centre of Angra, a man has been arrested for drug trafficking. During an operation in the slum, the police caught the man in possession of various drugs in quantity. He has been placed in custody.
05/01/2024 – A 24-year-old man has been executed with 3 shots in Morro da Glória, Centre Angra. The crime occurred in the early night on a passing avenue, amid the city birthday event and the traditional run of the Holy Kings (Corrida dos Santos Reis). According to the first elements of the investigation, shots were heard but nobody wanted to testify as prevails the “law of silence” because of the fear of possible retaliations. Forensics went on locally, and the police investigated who is the author and the motivation of the crime.
08/01/2024 – A suspect of drug trafficking died in a shootout with the police in Sapinhatuba II, East Angra. When on routine patrol in the district, the officers received shots from 5 bandits. After the shootout, the officers found the suspect down and wounded, and in possession of a 9mm pistol. The man has been taken to the ER but died minutes after his entry at the hospital. His 4 comrades fled in the nearby bush.
15/01/2024 – A 50yo mason was arrested in Camorim Grande, East Angra, for having raped the granddaughter of his ex-concubine. According to the police, the 9-year-old child has been suffering sexual abuse since she was 8 and was forced to watch restrained content movies with the man. As per the seriousness of the facts, the Department of Justice decided to keep him in preventive detention.
16/01/2024 – Two suspects died during a shootout with the police in Sapinhatuba II, Centre of Angra. The shootout took place amid an operation against drug trafficking in the region. As the officers were patrolling in the slum, they were received by shots and had to fight back. As soon as the cease-fire was declared, the police found two men down and severely injured. They were evacuated to the hospital, but they died as they arrived at the ER. The officers seized a pistol, a hand grenade, and drugs.
22/01/2024 – Police arrested a suspect of drug trafficking in Banqueta, East Angra. The intelligence service of the police went to check a denouncement call and caught a bandit at a drug-selling point. The officers also seized a large quantity of drugs, a weigher, and a walkie-talkie. The man has been placed in custody.
30/01/2024 – A 22-year-old young man, identified as drug trafficking manager in Morro da Fortaleza, in the center of Angra dos Reis, was shot during a confrontation with the Military Police (PM). According to the PM, the operation took place after a report that an armed man was selling drugs. A team moved to the location, and when the criminals spotted them, a confrontation ensued. After the confrontation, the police found the young man lying down and with him drugs, a gun and a grenade. The fleeing gang ran into a wooded area.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Shootouts remain the main risk facing personnel in Angra dos Reis. Several security operations related to drug trafficking were also registered this month.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move until the gunfire has clearly ended.
- Attention to the sounds of shots when driving through BR-101, which has on its margins many gang-controlled zones.
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of ‘communities’, particularly: Downtown, Parque Belém, Sapinhatuba I, Sapinhatuba II, Sapinhatuba III, Areal, Parque Mambucaba and Morro da Glória I e II.
- Avoid stopping on BR-101 roadside, due to cases of robberies, especially in the most isolated areas.
- Be careful when walking downtown as there is a risk of petty crimes.
- After nightfall, avoid circulating on the BR-101, due to the increased risk of robbery and assault.
