G20 EVENTS IN RIO – 14 TO 19 NOVEMBER

Between 14 and 19 November, Rio de Janeiro will host the G20 Social, Urban 20 (U20), and the G20 Leaders’ Summit, events that will bring together leaders from the 19 member countries, as well as the African Union and the European Union. To improve urban mobility and maintain public order during these events, some roads will be closed, transportation stations will be shut down, and the waterfront areas will be blocked to ensure the safety of the delegations.

To assist our clients, Interlira provides important information:

  • Event Location

Heads of State will meet at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio (MAM), located in Flamengo, in the South Zone, where 55 delegations from 40 countries and 15 international organizations are expected.

  • Santos Dumont Airport Closure

On November 18 and 19, Santos Dumont Airport will be closed. All flights to and from Santos Dumont will be transferred to the Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport, located on Ilha do Governador.

  • Aterro do Flamengo Road Closures

The lanes of Aterro do Flamengo will be completely closed to traffic on November 17, 18, and 19, with access restricted to the delegations’ convoys and vehicles related to the event.

Pedestrian overpasses will be closed, with only underground passageways remaining open.

  • Suspension of Leisure Areas

During the event, there will be no access to leisure areas along the beaches of Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana, as well as in Aterro do Flamengo, on November 15, 17, 18, 19, and 20.

  • Parking and Loading/Unloading on the Beach Front

From November 15 to 19, parking will be prohibited along the waterfront areas of Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana, especially in front of hotels, with restrictions on loading and unloading operations.

  • Area Fencing

From November 17 to 19, the area between the Estácio de Sá monument and the Trevo do Estudante will be fenced for access control.

  • Access to the Linha Vermelha and Other Roads

The Linha Vermelha will be the main route for the delegations’ travel, remaining open to traffic, except during the passage of convoys. Avenida Brasil will be used as an alternative route, with other roads, such as the South Zone and Barra da Tijuca waterfronts, as well as the Linha Amarela, remaining open but subject to temporary interruptions during the movement of the authorities.

Recommendations

  • Avoid areas near the events and the streets used by the participants to reach the events;
  • Anticipate traffic disruptions close to the event location and plan additional time for long and short          trips;
  • Avoid Restricted Areas: Stay clear of MAM, Aterro do Flamengo, and beaches of Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana due to access restrictions;
  • Expect Increased Security: Be prepared for checkpoints and delays, and always carry identification;
  • Check Flight Changes: Verify flight schedules, especially for Santos Dumont Airport, which will be closed on November 18-19.
