PROTEST FOR MORAES’ IMPEACHMENT – 7 SEPTEMBER

The political opposition has called its supporters for a protest on Saturday, 7 September. The event is expected to occur in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. According to media sources, the main event will occur in São Paulo, where there should be the greatest participation in the event. Relevant politicians have confirmed their attendance, including some congressmen.

Background

Initially scheduled to occur by 25August, the objective of this demonstration is to show discontent with recent decisions by the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF), and especially those taken by Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The act should also endorse the request for impeachment of Moraes that should be presented on Monday, 9September.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro asked his supporters to exclusively gather on Avenida Paulista, however, the possibility of protests in other locations is not ruled out.

The suspension of the social network X (former Twitter) last week should propel the event, attracting more participants.

São Paulo

The demonstration is expected to happen in Avenida Paulista, downtown, from 14h. See the red pin below. Nonetheless, people should start gathering earlier than the time announced.

Rio de Janeiro

The demonstration is expected to happen in Avenida Atlântica, Copacabana, from 9h. See the red pin below. Nonetheless, people should start gathering earlier than the time announced.

Recommendations

  • Avoid areas near the rally zones and the streets used by the participants to reach their gathering point;
  • Anticipate traffic disruptions close to the rally location and plan additional time for long and short trips;
  • Do not engage in political debates, or mention any opinion about the topic;
  • Avoid wearing red shirts or Brazilian jerseys, as they might be interpreted as an indication of political affiliation.
