The Army and Air Force sent official bulletins to the troops determining that the military who are members of political parties should disaffiliate from parties. The announcement is part of a movement made by’ Lula’s government to reestablish good relations with the Armed Forces. One of the steps is to depoliticize the military, which during Bolsonaro’s government became quite involved with politics.
Turning a Blind Eye
According to the law, active military personnel are prohibited to affiliate themselves to political parties. Only those in the reserve can do so. However, during the past government, according to political commentators, this rule was not properly enforced. The Armed Forces argued that they do not have a team actively inspecting if their members are complying with this rule. Now, under the new administration, if they do not comply with the rule, it was announced that there is risk of punishment. According to the Army, his determination requires disaffiliation as soon as possible.
