On Wednesday (3/08), representatives of the Armed Forces went to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to meet with Court technicians and inspect the source code of electronic voting machines. The source code is a set of software programming lines, with the instructions for the system to work. The opening of the code allows inspection by the civil society. According to media sources, this is another episode that has developed from critics made by the current Federal Government against the Brazilian electronic voting system, particularly the electronic voting machines.
Urgency to Inspect the Source Code
In a letter classified as “very urgent” and sent to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira asked the Armed Forces to have access to the ballot box’s source code. Oliveira asked that the data be made available by August 12th. However, according to information released by media outlets, the source code has been available since October 2021, when, during an event, the TSE opened the code.
Accusations Against the Electoral System
The inspection of the Armed Forces takes place amid frequent criticisms by President Jair Bolsonaro against the electronic voting machines, Electoral Justice and the electoral system. Even though no evidence of possible irregularities were presented so far, the President and his allies say that the electoral process is prone to frauds and has already been defrauded.
