The Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) received until early afternoon of Thursday (27) 1,789 complaints of electoral harassment in the second round campaign. The number corresponds to almost 30 times the total recorded until the first round. Until 2 October, date of the first round, the MP accounted for 61 complaints, thus a 2,932% increase. The illegal practice is adopted by companies that try to influence the vote of employees through threats, coercion and promises of benefits.
2018 Elections
The total number of complaints registered so far is also eight times greater than that registered in the entire 2018 election period. In that year, the MPT accounted for 212 complaints in all.
By Region and State
In the second round, the Southeast region recorded the highest number of complaints (765), ahead of the South (501) and Northeast (294).
Among the states, Minas Gerais has the highest number of complaints sent to the MPT: 496. Paraná (196), São Paulo (175) and Santa Catarina (168) come in the following positions.
Number of Companies
In addition to the number of complaints, between the two shifts, the number of companies denounced also grew: from 52 to 1,388.
Fines
Judge Antônio Umberto de Souza Júnior, of the Regional Labor Court of the 10th Region (TRT-10), in Brasília, ordered goods, services and tourism companies to pay a fine of R$ 10,000 per employee who suffers electoral harassment. The preliminary decision, this Tuesday (25), is the result of a request from two labor unions: the Single Workers’ Center (CUT) and the General Union of Workers (UGT).
Parlimentary Commission of Inquiry
On Tuesday (25/10), Senators sent a request for the creation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate allegations of electoral harassment practiced by businessmen and mayors. The necessary support of 27 senators was already obtained.
To start working, the CPI still needs to be read in plenary and then installed. Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) will start analyzing the the CPI requests now that elections came an end.
