Brazil leads the number of diagnoses and deaths from dengue in 2024, with 82% of all suspected cases of the disease registered in the world. This is what the new report on the epidemiological situation of arbovirus from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows. There were 7.67 million suspected cases and 3.57 million confirmed cases worldwide.

Brazil
Of this total, Brazil represents 6.3 million suspected cases and 3.04 million proven cases. Furthermore, the country accounts for 77.3% of the 3,680 deaths and 82.3% of the 16,242 global cases of severe dengue.
Increase in Brazil
In Brazil, the latest report from the Health Ministry, with data up to 25 May, shows that the total number of probable cases this year is 328.6% above that recorded in the same period in 2023. Furthermore, the number of deaths is also 255.1% higher than in the same period last year. The historic advance led 10 states and the Federal District to declare an emergency: Acre, Amapá, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.
Increase in America
While a substantial increase in dengue cases has been reported globally over the past five years, this increase has been particularly large in the Region of the Americas, where the number of cases has already surpassed seven million by the end of April 2024, surpassing the annual high of 4 .6 million cases in 2023.
Problems in Diagnosis
However, as many countries do not have mechanisms for diagnosing and recording the disease, the true impact of the disease on the world is probably underestimated, says the WHO. The agency defends the need for robust real-time dengue surveillance in response to the rise of the disease.
