On Friday (24/06), media sources informed that the Economy Ministry supports a new package of measures to compensate states that lose revenue by removing the ICMS on diesel and gas. The new proposal provides that the R$29,6 billion that the government would use to compensate the states would be spent on the payment of direct aid to the poorest population and to truck drivers.
How the Package Will Work
Of the R$ 29,6 billion planned for compensation in 2022, most, R$ 22 billion, goes to increasing Auxílio Brasil, which would go from R$ 400 to R$ 600. R$ 5 billion goes to the creation of an aid to truck drivers in the purchase of diesel, in the amount of R$ 1.000. The remaining amount will be used to increase the Gas Voucher value (currently R$ 53), which was created last year.
Eyes on the Election
According to political commentators, the package is a way to President Bolsonaro seek support from the poorest, a group of electors among which he has not managed to overcome some adversaries, according to recent election polls. Meanwhile, the benefits planned to truckers, seen a group faithful to the President, would have the intention to maintain their support and avoid any strike, since this is a group strongly affected by the diesel price increase.
