On 9 November, in his first visit to Brasília after the election, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended dialogue with the “Centrão” – an important political group in the Congress – and promised not to interfere in the processes of choosing the new presidents of the National Congress. The move was seen as positive message to Federal Chamber President Arthur Lira, who will attempt reelection and is an essential potential ally for Lula’s government to be able to approve its projects while facing a large opposition from the Liberal Party (PL). The PL is Bolsonaro’s. party and it is the one with the biggest number of congressmen elected, 99 in the Federal Chamber and 13 in the Senate.
Visit to the Federal Supreme Court (STF)
Lula also met with the ministers of the STF and preached harmony between the Powers. Experts saw this attitude as a sign that Lula may choose a different path in opposition to the institutional conflict constantly stimulated by the current president, Jair Bolsonaro. Therefore, they expect that in terms of institutional relations, there may be more stability.
Relations With the Armed Forces
For political commentators, Lula is trying to avoid conflicts with those in the Armed Forces that supported his adversary and maintain stability. When asked by journalists, he said that “there is no time for revenge”. The newly elected President also made a comment on the protests requesting a military coup against his madate by saying that “These people have nothing to contest,” but added that an investigation into the financing of anti-democratic acts is necessary.
