The Chamber of Deputies approved a project that typifies the crime of dominating cities, known as the “novo cangaço”. The proposal now goes to the Senate for consideration.
What is the “Novo Cangaço”
The expression “novo cangaço” has been used to characterize the action of heavily armed criminal organizations that surround small towns to carry out robberies, usually at bank branches.
The New Bill
The bill adds a paragraph to the Penal Code to define the crime. According to the text, the “novo cangaço” consists of blocking roads or public buildings, with the use of weapons, to avoid the approach of security forces and with the aim of committing a crime.
The proposal also includes the crime of dominating cities among heinous crimes. The penalty provided for in the proposal ranges from 15 to 30 years in prison. If the action leads to death, the penalty can reach 40 years.
