Public Security Institute (ISP) statistics pointed out that crimes of extorsion increased by more than 40%, while intentional lethal and violent crimes increased by 7,4% in 2022. Other types of crimes also increased such as threatening (14,8%), cell phone theft (10%), and other thefts (3%). Despite these numbers, some rates decreased in comparison with 2022, such as deaths resulting from police interventions (35%), and street robberies (17%). Also, in 2023, the corporation seized 610 rifles, representing an increase of 28% in 2022.

12/01/2024 – An escort girl was arrested in Pavão Pavãozinho slum, in Copacabana, South RJ, for having robbed her clients with the “Boa noite, Cinderella” scam (spiked drink scam). She was under investigation by the Tourist Police since February 2023 as she robbed an Italian tourist (cell phones, IDs, credit cards, laptops, and perfumes). The detectives declared that she also robbed crypto actives from one of her clients.
15/01/2024 – Famous American art dealer Brent Sikkema was found stabbed dead in his house in Jardim Botânico, South RJ. The first element of the investigation pointed out that he was the victim of a robbery followed by murder. Sikkema was 75 years old and used to spend some time in RJ during New Year´s Eve and Carnival. He leaves a 12yo son and a husband. He founded the famous art gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co., in 1991 in New York City.
15/01/2024 – Famous retired MMA athlete Diego Braga Nunes was found dead in Itanhangá, West RJ. He went into the slum Morro do Banco to negotiate the return of his stolen motorcycle. The investigation pointed out that he had been kept as a hostage by the criminals as they thought he was a militia man. They then executed him. (Update 16/01) An 18yo bandit was arrested after a police operation. He confessed to the execution of Nunes and confirmed they thought he was a militia man. The bandit´s partners are on the run.
16/01/2024 – An intense shootout took place in Jacarezinho, North RJ, as police special forces were destroying barricades from the streets of the district. During the shootout, 2 suspects died, and one was injured. During the action, the officers found 2 pistols, 3 hand grenades, and 52 ammunitions. Three civilians were injured by stray bullets. All of them were rescued and are being healed at the hospital.
17/01/2024 – A community leader of Gardênia Azul slum was executed in Jacarepaguá, West RJ. According to the first elements of the investigation, the victim was getting out of a restaurant when bandits got out of a car, came towards him, and began to shoot. He tried to find shelter inside the restaurant, but the criminals followed him and executed him in the backyards of the restaurant. The investigation points out that the murder was ordered by the militia of Rio das Pedras, a neighboring slum of Gardênia Azul. Nobody was arrested.
18/01/2024 – Bandits installed burning barricades during a police operation in Manguinhos, North RJ. The barricades, mainly tires in flames, closed the main avenue of the district and forced drivers to reverse course. Residents related an intense shootout.
18/01/2024 – A security guard of a supermarket in Vila Isabel, North RJ, has been stabbed during his duty. The officer had previously caught his aggressor robbing chocolate in the store. The bandit ran away but came back with a knife and stabbed the victim. The guard was rescued by the ER and brought to the hospital, but he did not make it. The police arrested the murderer with 2 knives and placed him in custody.
19/01/2024 – One of the drug trafficking managers of Cidade de Deus slum, West RJ, was arrested by the Police and the K9 battalion. Indeed, during a search and arrest operation, the officers caught the bandit and noticed he had an open warrant since 2014 for the attack on the Police base of the slum. He is also investigated for drug trafficking and a homicide attempt on a police officer. He also has more than 6 records for homicide.
19/01/2024 – Mass robbery provoked panic in Barra da Tijuca, West RJ. The bandits were amid a group of jugglers and profited from the red signal to rob the drivers. Nobody was hurt, and no suspect was arrested. The police are still searching for the suspects.
