Rio has recorded a 173% increase in cases of abuse against children under the age of 11 in the past three years. In 2020 there were 118 recorded cases of child abuse within the age group. Last year the number increased to 323 and 47% of the cases were carried out by parents according to the State Public Security Institute (ISP).
12/06/2024 – Civil police investigate the rape allegation of a 12-year-old girl in the North of Rio which took place last Wednesday (12). The girl states the rape was carried out by three 14-year-old boys; the minors are her classmates. Another student heard her scream for help during the attack and suffered physical attacks when trying to defend her classmate. Other witnesses have also come forward.

14/06/2024 – A motorcyclist narrowly escaped being hit by gunfire on Friday night (14) in an attempted robbery in Madureira, in Rio’s North Zone. A 38-year-old Marine sergeant was riding on Rua Capitão Couto de Menezes when he was approached by two men on a motorcycle. Frightened, he tried to go back the wrong way. Criminals fired shots but when military police arrived, they ran away.
15/06/2024 – On Saturday (15) a gang of thieves from São Paulo were arrested for robbing houses on Ilha do Governador. The group monitored the routines of residents closely and when no one was home they would break down the door. The gang stole money, jewelry, watches, and electronics during the 10 minutes they were in the house.
16/06/2024 – On Sunday (16), a lawyer was arrested after attempting to bring 6kg of marijuana to the Dr. Serrano Neves Penitentiary in Bangu. When the lawyer went through the security checkpoint, the guards noticed a suspicious volume under his clothes. He was sent through a body scanner, which identified the drugs. He was arrested.
17/06/2024 – On Monday (17) morning, the attempted robbery of a truck ensued on Estrada do Itararé. The bandits tried to steal the vehicle, which was carrying a load of cleaning supplies valued at R$64,000. The gang was intercepted by police and during the confrontation traffic was closed on Estrada do Itararé and Avenida Itaoca. No one was injured and one suspect was arrested.
17/06/2024 – Man killed after being hit in a shootout between criminals and police officers in Maré on Monday (17). According to police officers they were attacked during a routine patrol of the area. The suspects fled after the exchange of gunfire and the victim was brought to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.
17/06/2024 – Police officers were patrolling in Vila Kennedy (Bangu) when they were attacked by criminals leading to a shootout on Monday (17). The shootout took place near a school leading the students to hide under their desks to avoid stray bullets. A rifle was seized. No one was arrested.
17/06/2024 – Monday (17) a plainclothes police officer was surprised by two suspects at a stop sign who announced a robbery in Taquara. The officer reacted by shooting the suspects and calling for backup. One suspect was arrested, and the other was killed.
18/06/2024 –Two people died during an attempted robbery on Tuesday (18) morning in Higienópolis. Four suspects tried to steal a motorcycle in the early hours of the morning when police intercepted a shootout between the two parties. Two people on the bus and bus stop were caught in the crossfire, one suspect was brought into custody, and the other three escaped.
18/06/2024 – Two men attempted to escape from prison in the 32nd DP in Taquara on Tuesday (18). According to witnesses the men escaped through ventilation pipes and broke into the Research Information System room before reaching the street. When local civil police officers noticed the escape and managed to recapture them after they got on a bus.
18/06/2024 – Civil Police carried out a third operation in Maré in 8 days on Tuesday (18). The Cargo Robbery and Theft Police Station (DRFC) carried out three search and seizure warrants in the area, one of the thefts had an estimated loss of R$3 million in clothing items. One person was arrested.
18/06/2024 – Two young people were shot in an attempted robbery in Recreio dos Bandeirantes in the early hours of Tuesday (18). The boys were returning home from work when they suffered an attempted robbery while in their vehicle, the driver reacted to the approach and exchanged shots with the robbers.
19/06/2024 – A man was arrested Wednesday morning (19) after suspicion of him ejaculating on a woman inside a train carriage at Estação Madureira da Supervia. Military Police were called by other passengers who witnessed the act. The man confessed to the crime.
19/06/2024 – One of the main roads in Rio Comprido, Rua Barão de Petrópolis, was closed due to a demonstration against the police operations in the area that took place on Wednesday (19). Onde Tem Tiroteio (OTT) reported on social media that the police operation began at 8:00, with reports of a shooting and armored vehicles circulating Morro do Fogueteiro. The protest led to a bus being hijacked to be used as a barricade.
20/06/2024 – On Thursday (20) the Civil Police began Operation Bandeira Livre against drug traffickers on Ilha do Governador who have been extorting money from app drivers. The investigation shows that traffickers charged drivers in the area and created weekly charge sheets to identify the drivers who were authorized to work in the region. If the driver was not authorized to drive, they would damage or burn the vehicle.
