30/03/2024 – A security camera caught bandits attacking a woman in Lagoa, South RJ. The two criminals were on a motorcycle and the victim was waiting at a bus stop. According to the Public Security Institute, 43 robberies of pedestrians were registered in January and February 2024.
30/03/2024 – Two mass robberies were registered on the same avenue in Inhaúma, North RJ. The crimes occurred in an hour in the afternoon and were, according to witnesses, well-coordinated and quick. Many cars returned their way on contraflow. The Police declared an investigation is in progress.
30/03/2024 – Elderly was shot dead during a carjacking attempt in Coelho Neto, North RJ. The victim was returning from the mall with his wife and other relatives when bandits on four motorcycles surrounded the victim´s car. According to the relatives, the elderly did not hear the bandits. One of them shot once threw the window and hit the victim. A police car passed just after and evacuated the man to the hospital where he died.
31/03/2024 – A man tried to steal 50 meters of electric cables in Taquara, West RJ. He was caught in the act by a routine patrol of the police. During the control, the officers found tools and knives. They also discovered that the suspect has already seven criminal records.
31/03/2024 – A 25-year-old female foreigner was raped in a nightclub in Lapa, the central area of RJ. The young woman was accompanied by a friend of hers and met a man. The latter invited her to the “dark room” of the club. As soon as she entered the room, she fell into an ambush and was raped by numerous men. Both girls wanted to go to the precinct, but they were advised by the employees and security agents of the club not to do so. The Civil Police is investigating the case.
01/04/2024 – Two suspects were wounded during a shootout with the Police in Praça Seca, West RJ. According to the Corporation, a routine patrol has been targeted by bandits and replied, in Morro da Bica, in Praça Seca. During the shootout, two suspects were wounded. After the shootout, the officers found a rifle, a handgun, and drugs.
01/04/2024 – A woman was wounded during a shootout between rival gangs in Rocha Miranda, North RJ. Bandits from the “Morro da Serrinha” slum, in Madureira, tried to invade the “Faz Quem Quer” slum, in Rocha Miranda.
02/04/2024 – The suspect of being the head of security of Red Command (CV) leader of Pará State was arrested in Vila Cruzeiro, North RJ. He was running from an open warrant. The investigation points out that his boss would also be hiding in Rio de Janeiro and would be actively participating in the expansion of the CV in the western area of the Carioca Capital.
02/04/2024 – An off-duty firewoman was shot during a carjacking attempt in Tijuca, North RJ. She received a stray bullet in the chest as a policeman on foot patrol caught in the act four bandits attempting a carjacking. The gunfight began when the bandits saw the officer. They tried to run away with the stolen car but crashed a few meters further.
02/04/2024 – A 50-year-old man was arrested in the Centre of RJ for impersonating a detective. He was uncovered as he was threatening a waiter in a bar. Detectives from the 5th Precinct (Centre) went to the bar to control the situation but did not recognize the man, alleging that he was also based in the 5th Precinct. He was immediately handcuffed and searched. On him, the cops found a gun, ammunition, knives, a brass knuckle, and an official detective ID card.
03/04/2024 – A shootout between rival gangs killed 3 in Vila Isabel, North RJ. The gunfight occurred at dawn as a commando of the Red Command (CV) tried to invade the slum “Morro dos Macacos”, a stronghold of the Third Pure Command (TCP). Some bandits fled passing through compounds in a nearby street, outside the slum.
03/04/2024 – A motorcyclist couple was carjacked on Avenida Brasil in Cajú, North RJ. The entire scene was recorded on video and shared with the press. The bandits closed the way of the couple, grabbed their guns, took the motorcycle, and fled at high speed. According to the Police, no unit has been called, but they reinforced their presence in the area.
04/04/2024 – A suspect died during a carjacking attempt in Maracanã, North RJ. The man was attacking a car on Avenida Maracanã when he was shot by a passing man. The bandit died on the spot.
05/04/2024 – A 71-year-old woman was shot dead during a shootout between Milicia and Red Command (CV) in Gardênia Azul, West RJ. According to the Corporation, the victim was at her house door when two bandits on a motorcycle passed shooting. She was hit in the chest. According to the Fogo Cruzado Institute, she was the 10th victim of a shooting in the area since the beginning of 2024.
06/04/2024 – A robbery attempt provoked intense attention on Linha Vermelha in São Cristóvão, North RJ. According to the Police, officers were informed about a robbery attempt. As they arrived on the scene, the bandits started the shootout and fled. There are no records of wounded or arrested.
07/04/2024 – A 26-year-old woman was shot in the head in Realengo, West RJ. According to her family, her ex-boyfriend, who is linked to local drug trafficking, would be responsible for this crime as he did not accept the end of their relationship. According to witnesses, the victim was in the street when her aggressor shot at her.
07/04/2024 – A 37-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in Jacaré, North RJ, with wounds in the head. According to her relatives, her companion would be the author of the crime. After receiving a strange message on social media, one of her relatives went to the victim’s house and found the body. The suspect would have killed her with a hatchet and run away.
08/04/2024 – A 39-year-old woman was burnt in a train station in Campo Grande, West RJ. A patrol of the train police was called to the train station Augusto Vasconcelos and discovered the woman on the train platform.
08/04/2024 – A shootout between bandits and the Police left three wounded by shrapnel in Cachambi, North RJ. According to the Corporation, a patrol went to control a suspected stolen vehicle when the three suspects started to shoot. The officers replied and arrested one, the others ran away. A rifle, a stolen car, various cell phones, ID cards, wallets, and various credit cards were found at the scene.
08/04/2024 – Two men were caught red-handed installing security cameras in the street in Brás de Pina, North RJ. According to the Civil Police, the equipment was installed upon command of the local drug trafficking boss. The detectives found five cameras that were already installed in the area. The two suspects were charged with criminal association with drug trafficking.
10/04/2024 – A doctor was injured by a stray bullet in Barra da Tijuca, West RJ. The crime took place at night as the doctor was quitting his duty. He was in a taxi when passing by the Barra Shopping Mall, two bandits tried to rob the car just before the taxi. One of the criminals shot and hit the doctor.
12/04/2024 – A detective was arrested for extorting a family on a false charge of murder. An elderly man died at home and a civil police officer accused the deceased man’s family of murder and required R$ 100,000 and the victims’ house in exchange for his silence. In addition, the criminals intimidated the victims to sign a fake contract of purchase and sale.
13/04/2024 – A woman had her cell phone stolen in Cinelândia, on Saturday (13/04). After the crime, she began to be extorted by criminals, who demanded R$2,000 to return the device. She reported the fact to the 5th Police Department, which managed to identify one of the criminals and, from there, organized an operation to arrest the other members. Together with the victim, they went to Central do Brasil and, at the moment she approached one of those responsible for receiving the amount demanded, the police made the arrests in the act. Four people were arrested in Central do Brasil, on Wednesday night. The members arrested were two teenagers, aged 13 and 17.
13/04/2024 – One man died and another was injured during a shooting attack on Saturday night (13/04), on Avenida Cesário de Melo, close to the entrance to Comunidade do Aço, in Santa Cruz, in the West Zone of Rio. According to preliminary information, one of the victims would be a resident of Comunidade do Aço. The man who died would be a militiaman known as Rafinha. He would be part of the Santa Cruz militia and was once a security guard for criminals known as CL and Ecko. Currently, he was appointed as the leader of Favela do Aço.
14/04/2024 – A 17-year-old teenager ran over a group of people with his mother’s car, in the early hours of this Sunday (14), on Rua Boiacá, in Bento Ribeiro, in Rio’s North Zone. The collision occurred while some people were in the middle of the road after a fight involving the minor, who reportedly reappeared at the scene after going to get his mother’s car.
15/04/2024 – A group approached people on the street and offered fake magazine subscriptions. According to the report of one of the victims, the agreed payment was R$69, divided into 10 installments of R$6.90, including a gift, which was given to her. In the first attempt to pay by credit card, the scammers claimed that there was an error and went through the second time, when they deducted a total of R$2,000, a value around 30 times greater. The police claim that the criminals managed to steal around R$ 200,000.
16/04/2024 – Armed criminals attempted to rob a driver and a passenger by car on Rua Potirendaba, in Vila Valqueire, in the West Zone. One of the victims was a police officer, who resisted and shot the criminals. The case took place on Tuesday night (16/04). The images show the police officer parking the car to allow a woman to disembark. Then, a black vehicle stops and an armed bandit announces the robbery. The agent reacts and hits the criminal.
17/04/2024 – A 7-month pregnant woman was kidnapped and kept in an abandoned building on Avenida Venezuela, Downtown, on Monday (15/04). She was later rescued by the police. The building in which she was kept is occupied by homeless people and works as a smokehouse for drug traffickers from Morro da Providência, dominated by Comando Vermelho. According to testimony, the woman was kept by drug dealers as punishment for her boyfriend, who owed them a debt for drugs.
17/04/2024 – A Military police officer Harlei Medeiros de Paiva, aged 41, assigned to the 8th Military Judicial Police Station, was shot and killed during a confrontation with militiamen on Rua do Império, in Santa Cruz, on Wednesday (17/04) afternoon.
17/04/2024 – Three women were arrested this Wednesday (17), suspected of carrying out payroll loan scams in the center of Rio de Janeiro. A company suspected of carrying out the same scams was operating at the location of the arrests. Three people were working in the office, as well as an elderly woman who was about to close a contract.
17/04/2024 – A mass robbery was perpetrated by criminals on the Red Line Express road, near Complexo da Maré, on Wednesday afternoon (17/04). The police arrived at the scene and exchanged shots with the criminals on the road. According to the Military Police, agents recovered a car that had been stolen and no injuries were reported. After the confrontation, the bandits fled.
17/04/2024 – Two scrapyards were closed in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio, this Wednesday (17) for not having the licensing document issued by Detran.RJ and not proving, with invoices, the origin of the material found. The owners were taken to the 35th DP (Campo Grande), which opened an investigation to investigate possible irregularities. This is the 11th action of Operation Desmonte since August last year. To date, more than 500 tons of scrap have been seized and destroyed. With the task force’s inspection actions, more than 120 companies in the sector are already seeking to regularize their documentation to work legally.

Images of the act shared on social media show the Estrada do Quitungo, near Rua Oliveira Melo, partially blocked with crates, tires, and other burning materials.
21/04/2024 – Drug traffickers from the Third Pure Command (TCP) attempted to invade the Complexo da Serrinha, in the Madureira neighborhood, both controlled by the Red Command (CV). The shooting took place from 18:00 to 23:00.

22/04/2024 – One man invaded an apartment, robbed, and stabbed a father and his daughter in Rua Amâncio Pereira, Jardim Guanabara neighborhood, Ilha do Governador, Rio’s North Zone. The daughter had been tied by the criminal but managed to call her father before. When he arrived, the criminal attacked him and escaped.
24/04/2024 – A police operation was carried out in Morro do Urubu, Pilares neighborhood, Rio’s Zona Norte. The objective was to repress an ongoing dispute between the CV and the TCP for territory and vehicle robbery in the area.
24/04/2024 – Drug traffickers from the Red Command (CV) attempted to invade Morro dos Macacos, in Vila Isabel, Rio’s North Zone, in the early hours of Wednesday (24/04). The event caused intense gunfire in the upper part of the community and frightened the region’s residents. According to media sources, the Red Command faction has been trying to dominate the community, currently run by drug traffickers from the Third Pure Command (TCP), for just over a month, generating several conflicts in the region.

The objective is to repress the movement of criminals, prevent attempts at territorial expansion, and curb vehicle and cargo theft. According to reports from residents, intense clashes occurred in the region — there are reports of bomb explosions.
24/04/2024 – An armed group invaded the Sorriso Aberto Reception Unit and CAPs Arthur Bispo do Rosário, in Taquara, West Zone of Rio, this Wednesday (24). The men threatened to kill and attack staff and patients. Rio City Hall reported that it registered an incident and requested support from the Military and Civil Police to prevent crimes like this from happening again. The Municipal Public Order Secretariat is monitoring the investigation.
25/04/2024 – A 27-year-old man attempted to rob a photographer, who is also a military policeman, in Aterro do Flamengo, Flamengo neighborhood, in the morning of Thursday (25/04). The criminal was driving a motorcycle and approached the victim while he was taking photos and wanted to take the expensive photo equipment. The robber pretended to be armed and was shot dead.
25/04/2024 – On Thursday (25/04), a woman was shot during an operation by the Military Police in the Furquim Mendes favela, in the North Zone. According to officers, while policing the region, criminals shot at them, which started a confrontation.
25/04/2024 – Several armed clashes were reported in Alemão and Penha complexes, respectively in Penha and Bonsucesso neighborhoods, Rio’s North Zone. The intense shootouts are taking place in the favelas amid a large operation by the Civil and Military police aiming to arrest criminals from other states. According to the Civil Police, Alemão functions as a trafficking “bunker” and a starting point for attacks on other territories.
25/04/2024 – The Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry of the State (MPRJ) completed an operation on Thursday (25/04) to 12 arrest people and complete eight search and seizure warrants against members of a militia that operates in the Bateau Mouche favela, in Praça Seca, Rio’s West Zone. Sixteen people were reported to court for criminal association, extortion against traders, entrepreneurs, street vendors, and motorcycle taxi drivers, in addition to active corruption. Four people, members of the paramilitary group, have already been arrested. Among those reported in this operation, which was nicknamed Shipwreck, there are three law enforcement officers, a civil police officer, and two military police officers. According to the police, contact with the policemen was useful for the militiamen to avoid being “disturbed” while carrying out their criminal activities. The corrupt officers were responsible for preventing investigations and possible arrests. To do this, criminals made periodic payments to agents.
27/04/2024 – On Saturday night (27/04), drivers were robbed on Rua Honório, close to the corner of Rua Chaves Pinheiro, Cachambi neighborhood, in Rio’s North Zone. Videos circulating on social media show that criminals acted armed and with their faces covered. The bandits’ actions also caused panic among customers at a bar, who ran away. The crime took place at around 11:00. Images recorded by people who were in a bar show two cars crossing the road and criminals surrounding them. Nobody was arrested.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
