01/04/2023 – One fan died, and another was injured after being shot at a bar near the Maracanã stadium, after the Carioca Championship final between Flamengo and Fluminense. The shooter is an off-duty Criminal Police inspector who was arrested. In videos published on social networks, it is possible to hear nine shots being fired. Civil Police information indicates that there was a discussion between those involved. The author pulled out the firearm and shot the victims.

01/04/2023 – A 52-year-old man was stabbed three times during an attempted robbery on Rua Cecília Meireles in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone. He was on a motorcycle going to pick up a friend when he was approached by two robbers. During the approach, the man reacted and got into a fight with the robber. With that, the two robbers fled.
04/04/2023 – The Military Police seized two rifles and a submachine gun during an operation in Morro do Fubá, in the Campinho neighborhood, North Zone. There was a confrontation, and two criminals were shot. According to police information, upon arriving at the community, officers were attacked by armed criminals.
05/04/2023 – A joint operation between the Civil Police of Rio and Paraná managed to arrest Marcelo Rosa Andrietti, considered one of the most dangerous bank robbers in the country, having acted criminally in several states. He was found in the Leme neighborhood, South Zone, after eight months of investigation. Andrietti was on the run and had hidden in Rio where, according to police information, he commanded criminal actions for the faction to which he belongs.
07/04/2023 – A truck driver was rescued by the Military Police after being taken hostage during a cargo theft. The cargo was valued at R$600,000. According to the police, the victim was approached by criminals on Presidente Dutra Highway. But officers from the Irajá Battalion managed to rescue him, the vehicle and part of the stolen cargo in the Ficap community, in the Pavuna neighborhood, North Zone.
07/04/2023 – Catete police officers arrested three criminals for advertising and selling stolen cell phones on social media. According to the police, they were part of a criminal organization that operated on the subway in the South Zone. They lured victims with below-market prices and arranged a meeting at a subway station. There, the criminals delivered the devices, rushed the victims to make the PIX transfer and left quickly. By the time people realized that cell phones were blocked, it was too late.
12/04/2023 – The Federal Police (PF) carried out an operation with international cooperation aimed at dismantling a criminal organization specializing in money laundering from drug trafficking. 33 arrest warrants were served in six states and 49 search and seizure warrants were served in nine states. The operation was called “Match Point”. The main target was an Icelander who was arrested at his home in São Conrado, South Zone.
12/04/2023 – A fake Federal Revenue employee was arrested in Flamengo, South Zone for the crimes of aggravated theft, scam against the elderly and criminal organization. Police were called to the building after neighbors of an elderly woman became suspicious of his behavior. According to the investigations, the day before the attacks, a woman, also pretending to be an employee of the Revenue, called the victim’s home and reported that there were problems with the income tax declaration. She said she would send an employee the next day. On the appointed day, he would show up and be received at the victim’s house. According to the delegate, he took documents and stole goods, in particular jewelry and money.
12/04/2023 – A 51-year-old military police officer, assigned to the Institutional Security Office (GSI), in the Guanabara Palace, died after a robbery in Humaitá, South Zone. According to the Military Police, the officer was off duty and was shot. The gunman managed to flee. Witnesses reported that the police officer had just bought the motorcycle he was riding and had not driven even a kilometer before the crime. The recorded scenes show that the criminals would be on three or four motorcycles. The police officer runs when approached, but two criminals hold him and seem to steal his belongings. When the duo walks away in the middle of traffic, the PM gets up and shoots. One of the thieves, already on the other side of the track, retaliates, firing several shots. Then they run away, but they don’t take the officers’ motorcycle.
13/04/2023 – Rio Civil Police started the second phase of Operation Queen, against those responsible for the invasions that caused the recent clashes in the West Zone. At this stage, officers focused on the internet signal monopoly imposed by drug trafficking. Police served six search and seizure warrants at addresses in Barra da Tijuca and Freguesia. According to investigations, an internet, telephony, and TV provider partnered with Comando Vermelho to prevent other companies from operating in those locations. Technicians from competing companies are being expelled from the communities by traffickers. Criminals also vandalized the installed networks, cutting cables and setting fire to equipment.
14/04/2023 – A shooting left a man injured on Rua Frei Caneca in Catumbi, in downtown Rio. He had his car hit by about 40 rifle shots. According to the Civil Police, the crime is linked to a dispute over control of more than 40 points of the “jogo do bicho”, involving offenders from the North Zone and members of the contraband cigarette mafia from Baixada Fluminense.
16/04/2023 – An elderly woman died after hitting her head when pushed during a robbery on the sidewalk of Copacabana Beach, on Avenida Atlântica, South Zone. According to witnesses, the criminal is a 17-year-old minor who tore off the victim’s necklace when she was walking by with two friends.
17/04/2023 – The Military Police (PM) carried out an operation in Complexo da Maré, North Zone. One man died and another was injured. According to the PM, teams from the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) were in Maré and bandits shot at them, who responded. Two pistols, two magazines, ammunition and packs of hashish were seized. The PM did not inform the objective of this operation nor the reason for it to have happened during the night.
19/05/2023 – Federal Road police officers had a shooting with criminals on Avenida Brasil, near Bonsucesso, North Zone. Officers were following a group of criminals divided into two vehicles along the road when the shooting began. After, police were able to arrest five of them. Witnesses said that, because of the shooting, traffic was stopped, and other criminals took advantage and started robbing drivers.
19/04/2023 – Rio’s Civil Police launched an operation against a gang specialized in apartment thefts in the South Zone. According to investigations, the thieves came from São Paulo and invaded homes in Ipanema, Copacabana and Leblon after jewelry, designer bags and luxury watches. With false documents, they rented cars in São Paulo and drove to Rio, where they stayed in hotels. To define the targets, they had access to clandestine lists with names and data of people who acquired these goods. Another way to select victims was through social networks. Those who boasted became targets. With the targets defined, they began to monitor the addresses to find gaps in security and only invaded the properties if they were sure that they were empty. The material stolen in Rio was resold in São Paulo so as not to arouse suspicion.
21/04/2023 – Two men were executed in a gas station on Estrada da Cachamorra, in Campo Grande, West Zone. Security camera footage shows three hooded and armed men surrounding a car. The action of criminals lasts just over 30 seconds. One of them shoots through the vehicle’s front window, then opens the door. A man falls, and one of the criminals pulls him to the ground. After the victim falls, already injured, the criminals look for something in the car and in the man’s pockets. The hooded men then leave the crime scene.
25/04/2023 – A 17-year-old teenager was executed on Avenida das Américas, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone. Witnesses said he was with a group on the street when a man drove by on a motorcycle, shooting. The case is being investigated by the Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC).
26/04/2023 – A 19-year-old French woman was arrested by the Federal Police at Rio de Janeiro International Airport. The police, after routine checks, found about 8 kg of cocaine on her luggage. The drug was mixed in the filling of bonbons. According to police, the woman intended to board a commercial flight that would stop in Paris, France, before heading to her final destination in Nice.
26/04/2023 – The US vice-consul in Rio de Janeiro was attacked in Cinelândia, downtown Rio. A transvestite asked her for some bread, and with the victim’s refusal, she punched the vice-consul three times. After the aggression, the Vice-Consul took refuge in a cafeteria until the arrival of the police, who were called to the scene by witness.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
