The number of femicides, or aggravated homicide due to gender, committed this year in Rio de Janeiro state is already almost 20% higher than in the same period last year. There were 48 cases in the first six months of 2021 and 57 in the same period in 2022.

A report by Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Penitentiary Administration (Seap) revealed that 917 prisoners who should be wearing an electronic anklet are not being monitored for having violated the equipment. Among them is the drug dealer Marcelo Soares Medeiros, Marcelo PQD, former drug lord of Morro do Dendê, in Ilha do Governador, North Zone of the capital. PQD was released in August 2021, after a decision by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), which granted the criminal the progression of the sentence to house arrest, with monitoring. In March 2022, PQD broke the equipment several times, in the same day, and let the battery run out on two other different dates. The criminal enforcement law provides that the violation of the anklet will bring consequences such as the regression of the regime, the revocation of the temporary exit permit and the revocation of house arrest. The Court of Criminal Executions reported that it is waiting for a list from Seap with the names of the prisoners to take the appropriate measures.
23/07/2022 –A man’s body was found by military police in República Square, downtown Rio. People close to the victim said that the lawyer was stabbed after being robbed, as he was leaving after meeting with friends in Tiradentes Square.
24/07/2022 – Three people were shot during party organized by residents of a street in Realengo, West Zone. According to witnesses, a man who was not invited was the author of the shooting. Also, according to these reports, the suspect arrived with drinks and sat at a table reserved for residents. He did not like to be reprimanded and fired several shots, causing panic and injuring the victims.
24/07/2022 – Criminals stole the four wheels of a vehicle in the Shopping Metropolitano parking lot, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. According to the owner, he left the car in the parking lot around 18h40 and when he returned around 21h, he found the car without the wheels.
25/07/2022 – A military police officer is being investigated by the Civil Police for assaulting a domestic worker. The case was in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone. Security camera footage from the building’s elevator recorded the moment he slapped the woman in the face.
26/07/2022 – A young woman was shot dead inside her home in downtown Rio. According to her sister, who witnessed the crime and was not injured, Sarah was killed by her boyfriend. He entered the apartment where Sarah lived with her two children, her mother and sister, and killed her.
26/07/2022 – The Civil Police arrested a man who used a dog to rob and attack people in the South Zone of Rio. At least five people were victims of the crime, including a civil police officer and a military police officer. According to the investigations, Allan Kardec Areas Santos, 42, is homeless and was always on the sidewalks of several neighborhoods, mainly Jardim Botânico, Ipanema and Leblon. According to the police, if the victim of the robbery tried to react, he would order Macarena, the dog, to attack.
Our analysis:
Attacks with dogs like the one reported above are not that common, but it’s still important to know how to act.
- The first step is not to panic. If you get agitated and run or yell, it can make the animal more confident in his attack, or worse, you can appear threatening to it
- Also, avoid looking the dog directly in the eye. This gesture makes him feel challenged
- Don’t try to run. This can trigger the animal’s predatory instinct to hunt and catch, plus you won’t be able to outrun most dogs
- Distract the dog with another object. If he continues to threaten you, offer him something he can chew on, like your backpack, a bottle of water, or something else
- Look at the dog and order “go away”. If he continues to behave aggressively and ignoring or trying to calm it down is no longer working, turn to him and order him to back off. Use a strong, deep, and confident commanding voice
- Fight a dog that attacks. If the dog starts biting you, you will need to defend yourself
- To minimize the risks, try to protect your head, neck, and belly regions. Try squatting, hugging your knees and putting your head between your shoulders and knees and wait for the dog to calm down
- Leave the place slowly and carefully. After the dog loses interest in you, move away from the attack site slowly, leaving without sudden movements. Staying calm and still can be a test of your nerves in such a stressful situation, but it’s the best thing to do
- If you have been bitten by an unknown animal, the first thing to do is wash it well with soap and water. Then, look for a health centre for a doctor to evaluate the bite. Also look for a SUS health post immediately to start the rabies vaccination protocol.
26/07/2022 – Civil Police arrested two men suspected of breaking into homes and kidnappings in the South Zone. For this, they pretended to be painters and invaded houses. Once inside the houses, they threatened the victims with a weapon and immobilized them with seals and tape. The freedom of the residents was only obtained through a payment via pix. They were arrested in Morro do Fallet/Fogueteiro,downtown Rio.
27/07/2022 – A shooting in Providência favela, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, caused the interruption of the VLT circulation in the region. According to the transport administrators, lines 1, 2 and 3 started to operate partially for safety reasons. According to the website Voz das Comunidades, there was an operation by the Military Police, using armored vehicles and a helicopter.
27/07/2022 – Police officers from the Specialized Police Battalion in Stadiums (BEPE) arrested a man with five stolen cell phones in the surroundings of Maracanã stadium, North Zone. According to the police, the agents received information that a suspect would be practicing robberies in the surroundings of the stadium during the match between Flamengo and Athletico Paranaense, for the Copa do Brasil. After locating the man, he was arrested.
28/07/2022 – A man – identified by the victims as the “orange motorcycle robber” – is wanted by the police for attacking women in neighborhoods in the South Zone of Rio. Security cameras recorded the action of the criminal, who usually wears a coat and corners the victims on the sidewalk against the buildings.
28/07/2022 – Police officers freed two young men who had been kidnapped as they left a party in Vista Alegre, North Zone, on Wednesday morning (27). The captive was in a house in Vila Itamarati, in Duque de Caxias, Baixada Fluminense. A shooting happened, but no one was injured. One of the suspects was arrested, but the other managed to escape after stealing a car. The victims were leaving a party, along with two other friends, when they were approached by a vehicle with hooded and armed suspects. They took everyone’s belongings and cell phones and forced the two young men into the car.
28/07/2022 – Military Police (PM) released a woman and two children who had been held in private prison in Guaratiba, West Zone, for 17 years, according to the PM. The children’s father and the woman’s husband, identified as Luiz Antonio Santos Silva, was arrested for the crime. The siblings, aged 19 and 22, children of the woman and the suspect who had been keeping them in prison, were tied up, dirty and malnourished.
28/07/2022 – A criminal died near Praça do Pomar, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. According to first informations, he and a partner would be using two motorcycles to practice robberies in the region. A resident saw all the action of the duo from the window of the house, shot and hit one of the boys.
29/07/2022 – A suspect was injured during an attempted robbery. He attacked a military police officer in downtown Rio. The thief tried to steal the officer’s car, on a street near the Rio de Janeiros’s Sambódromo. The officer reacted, there was a shooting, and the suspect was injured.
