According to a survey by media sources disclosed on Sunday (29/05), between 2010 and 2021, 166 military police officers were expelled from Rio de Janeiro’s Military Police for crimes involving participation in militias. In the same period, 96 police officers were submitted to the Disciplinary Council. Another important piece of data is that the profile of police officers’ participation with militias has changed in recent years: from being leaders and direct participants in armed confrontations, many agents have started to work in the leakage of information to criminal organizations.
27/05/2022 – The police arrested a gang that used to steal credit cards before they reached customers. With a false document, they impersonate a customer whose card was lost or stolen, they asked for a new one to be issued, took the tracking code from the Post Office and changed the card’s password. With the card in hand, they cashed out money.

28/05/2022 – The street sweeper was shot during a shootout between criminals and police in Riachuelo neighborhood, North Zone. Witnesses claim that the criminals, who had just stolen a car, shot her to divert the attention of the police.
30/05/2022 – Fake street vendors were arrested by the Municipal Guard. Thieves pretend to be sellers to get close to victims, especially foreigners. This type of crime is on the rise in the South Zone’s beach.

Rio de Janeiro’s beaches are the best-known tourist spots, and it is precisely because of the large number of tourists that these places also attract criminals. Bearing this in mind, it is important to take some precautions: avoid taking valuables when you go to the beach and be careful when using your cell phone.
30/05/2022 – A student was stabbed in the abdomen and in the arm in Praça Cristiano Ottoni. He was attacked at night on one of the accesses to the Central do Brasil subway, in the Central region.
30/05/2022 – An argument ended with two men shot at a gas station convenience store on Capoeiras Road, in Campo Grande, West Zone. Investigations are in progress to identify the author of the shooting and clarify the motivation of the crime.
30/05/2022 – A 45-year-old man was killed by a stray bullet at a bus stop in Pavuna, North Zone. According to the Military Police, two criminals on a motorcycle shot at a police car on Pastor Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, but there was no reaction from the military. It is believed that the stray bullet came from this incident.
31/05/2022 – During a shootout a pastor was shot and children at municipal school had to seek shelter. Residents of Vila Kennedy, in the West Zone of Rio, reported an intense shooting that took place in the community since early Tuesday afternoon. The Military Police announced that police patrols were traveling through Vila Kennedy when “they were shot at”. Also, according to the PM, “there was a confrontation, and the criminals fled”.
01/06/2022 – A group specialized in cargo diversion was the target of Operation Resina, launched by the Civil Police and the Rio de Janeiro’s Public Ministry (MPRJ). According to investigations, the gang defrauded, with the participation of employees of the company that was targeted, the loss of resin shipments that had actually been diverted by the group. In order to not raise suspicions, the criminals would then report to the police an alleged theft that would have been committed by someone else. Agents seek to fulfill 21 search and seizure warrants in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias, Magé, Nova Iguaçu, Mesquita, Seropédica and Piraí. The group had two cores: one composed of employees of the company that owns the product and the other of businessmen who own transport companies and drivers, co-opted to falsely report the crime of theft.
Our analysis:
It is not uncommon for dishonest employees to try to commit crimes against the company that they work for. The reasons are diverse, but one thing in common about thefts against the company’s private property is knowledge about the company’s procedures and security policies, which turn the crimes easier for them to execute or to order other criminals to perform. One manner to avoid this type of crime is to perform thorough background check before hiring someone. It is advisable to hire a specialized company to do so. This is even more important when conducting international trade with an unknown company or with a company without reliable references. In addition, when the crime has already occurred, it is quite important to hire a specialized security team to proceed with mitigation measures to reduce the chances of the problem reappearing. This team can also make a liaison with local security forces that will be responsible for the formal investigation. Such connection can facilitate the exchange of information between the two sides and accelerate the case solution.
01/06/2022 – A civil police officer was killed after being shot during an attempted robbery on Pastor Martin Luther King Júnior Ave., in Inhaúma, North Zone. He was approached by four armed criminals, who shot him and then fled towards the Galinha community.
01/06/2022 – A shooting took place when agents from the Police Station for Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Investigations (Draco) went to check a complaint of extortion in the Jacarepaguá neighborhood, West Zone. At the scene, the team was attacked by criminals, and there was a confrontation. One person was arrested, a pistol and a stolen car were seized, and a 4-year-old girl was shot.
01/06/2022 – A Navy sergeant was found dead in the Maria da Graça neighborhood, North Zone. According to police, a knife was found next to the body. According to a witness, the naval officer was immobilized by two men as he was leaving a bar in the region.
01/06/2022 – Police officers arrested a couple who tried to rent an apartment with fake documents on Ipanema’s shore, South Zone. According to investigations, the couple chose luxury properties, stole furniture and electronic equipment and resold them in virtual stores.
01/06/2022 – A man died in a house fire in the Estácio neighborhood, Central Region. Witnesses said the fire may have been criminal. According to them, a neighbor set a mattress on fire near a door, and after that, the flames spread. Due to mobility difficulties, the victim was unable to leave in time and ended up not surviving.
01/06/2022 – A nurse was shot in the ankle as he entered Morro do Adeus, in Complexo do Alemão, North Zone, to attend a patient. He was taken to the hospital, but the injury was not serious. 02/06/2022 – A turmoil at the door of a school in the Méier neighborhood, North Zone, ended with a military policeman wounded in the head. During the turmoil another police officer fired into the air, apparently trying to disperse those involved in the fight. The Military Police reported that agents were patrolling the region when they were attacked by school students. The teenagers threw scissors and a brick at the police.
