From January to September 2024, 77 women were victims of femicide, according to data from the Public Security Institute (ISP). In the same period last year, there were 81 victims. Femicide attempts increased from 222 to 289. During the first nine months of 2023, 448 attempts were recorded, while this year the number rose to 525.

The gang acted mainly against the elderly, simulating loan operations. At the crime office, agents seized notebooks with notes and personal data of the victims.

02/11/2024 – Named the biggest car thief in Rio by the police, Luiz Felipe Medeiros Lage, known as Felipinho da NH, died on Saturday (02/11) during a dragnet on the Linha Vermelha, near the Caju favela. The shooting began after an off-duty police officer reacted to the aggression. Among the 180 criminal notes in which the bandit was involved are the deaths of two police officers.
03/11/2024 – A teacher was beaten, on Sunday night (03/11), by a driver during an argument on Avenida Ribeiro Dantas, in Bangu, West Zone. According to the police report, the victim would have asked the driver to remove the vehicle that was hindering her exit when she was surprised by offenses and aggressions.
04/11/2024 – The corpse of a 22-year-old woman was found by her family on the morning of Monday (04/11), on Travessa Santa Luzia, in the Viegas community, in Senador Camará, West Zone, with signs of violence. Her ex-boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of killing and hiding the young woman’s body inside the refrigerator.
05/11/2024 – A family had their belongings taken away on the morning of Tuesday (05/11), after suffering an accident and crashing their car into a pole on São Francisco Xavier Street, near Mangueira, North Zone. After the crash, the father and daughter were waiting for help when a homeless group looted the vehicle and took the victims’ belongings.
05/11/2024 – A 16-year-old teenager broke into a residence and held a family hostage, on Tuesday (05/11), on Maria Angélica Street, in Jardim Botânico, South Zone. The corporation reported that the teenager was apprehended when he tried to escape. The young man had already been detained on 15 other occasions and has 23 criminal records.
05/11/2024 – Armed criminals stole a van from Hemorio, on Tuesday afternoon (05/11), close to the Gasômetro Viaduct, near the Gentileza Terminal, Port Zone of Rio. The vehicle was full of medical equipment when it was taken by the bandits. According to the State Health Department (SES), the driver of the van was not injured and is doing well.
06/11/2024 – A 41-year-old street vendor was stabbed by her ex-husband, in Jardim Carioca, on Ilha do Governador, North Zone, on the morning of Wednesday (06/11). After the attack, a group of people surrounded and assaulted the man, who was detained in the act by Security Present officers. According to friends of the victim, the ex-husband would not have accepted the end of the relationship.
06/11/2024 – Six members of a gang specialized in stealing vehicles were arrested in flagrante delicto on Wednesday (06/11), in a joint operation by the Civil and Military Police. The suspects were detained when they were preparing to rob a house in Laranjeiras, South Zone.
06/11/2024 – A woman was the victim of sexual harassment inside a subway car on Wednesday (06/11). Upon arriving at the Cidade Nova station, in the Center, the victim called security guards to inform them about the case. The man was detained by the Police.
06/11/2024 – A man died, and a child was shot, this Wednesday (06/11), during a shooting attack near the Professor Lauro Travassos Municipal School, in Bangu, in the West Zone. According to reports on social networks, suspects would have fired more than 15 shots, scaring students who were leaving the school. According to the Municipal Health Department (SMS), the girl underwent surgery and is stable.
06/11/2024 – The Garriga de Menezes Educational Association, in the Freguesia neighborhood, West Zone, was again targeted by armed criminals on Wednesday afternoon (06/11). Two weeks ago, doorman Damião de Carvalho, 76, was shot dead during a robbery. From the security cameras, it is possible to see the robbers surrendering two men in the garage of the teaching unit.
07/11/2024 – A shootout between bandits and military police terrified the night of the residents of Vila da Penha, North Zone, on Thursday night (07/11). The confrontation would have started after a car was stolen by the criminals, starting a chase.
07/11/2024 – Prison agents from Minas Gerais, who accompanied the transfer of prisoners to Rio, mistakenly entered Cidade Alta, in the Complexo de Israel, on Thursday (07/11). They were shot at by the bandits and there was an exchange of fire. According to the Military Police, two Minas Gerais agents were injured by shrapnel, but are doing well. The prisoners were not injured, nor did they escape.
09/11/2024 – Images from the internal circuit of a condominium in Bangu, West Zone, caught three armed drug traffickers chasing a militiaman, in broad daylight, on Saturday (09/11). Residents said that there was an intense exchange of fire between them. According to witnesses, the traffickers are from Vila Kennedy. A man was arrested.
10/11/2024 – A 75-year-old man was assaulted during a robbery in Laranjeiras, South Zone, in the middle of the afternoon of Sunday (10/11), while parking his car. The approach and aggression were recorded by security cameras. In addition to stealing a bag with the elderly man’s belongings, the suspect also assaulted the man before fleeing.
10/11/2024 – A joint action by the civil police of Rio de Janeiro, Pará, and Minas Gerais arrested, on Sunday (10/11), in a restaurant on Avenida Olegário Maciel, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone, a man identified as one of the leaders of a criminal faction that operates in Belo Horizonte with expansion to the State of Pará. The criminal, considered highly dangerous and allied with the Red Command (CV), was staying at a luxury hotel.
10/11/2024 – A 46-year-old app driver was shot on Sunday afternoon (10/11), on Av. Pastor Martin Luther King, in Inhaúma, North Zone, when he was filling up his car at a gas station. According to the victim’s wife, he was shot in the chest during a police chase, after being mistaken for a bandit.
10/11/2024 – A team of military police officers from the Pacification Police Coordination (CPP) was shot at by criminals, on Sunday morning (10/11), in the locality of Barro Vermelho, in the Community of Lins de Vasconcelos, North Zone. During the confrontation, a PM was shot in the shoulder.
12/11/2024 – A military police officer from São Paulo and his brother were shot on Tuesday morning (12/11), after mistakenly entering Cidade Alta, in Complexo de Israel. According to the Military Police, the men entered the Porto Velho Road and were shot at by criminals. They were shot in the legs. The PM came to work at the G20.
12/11/2024 – A man was injured during a shootout on Praia da Barra, on Avenida Lúcio Costa, West Zone, on Tuesday afternoon (12/11). Two suspects participating in the incident were taken to the police station, one of them a teenager. According to the PM, the victim was assaulted when he tried to prevent an assault.
12/11/2024 – Two bandits on a motorcycle tried to rob a civil police officer, on Tuesday evening (12/11), in Varnhagen Square, in Tijuca, North Zone. The policeman reacted and shot the pilot. The other man fled.
12/11/2024 – A woman was arrested by the Federal Police when she was receiving care at the Passport Issuance Station of Shopping Leblon, South Zone, on Tuesday morning (12/11). She was a fugitive from justice for committing homicide.
14/11/2024 – A car belonging to Minister Márcio Costa Macêdo’s entourage was stolen on the morning of Thursday (14/11), in the Center. The robbery took place on Rua Riachuelo, in front of the Monte Alegre Hotel. According to the Military Police, the driver of the vehicle was standing in front of the hotel, waiting for an employee, when he was approached by two armed suspects on a motorcycle. The car was recovered on the Nova Holanda favela, in Complexo da Maré, North Zone. During an operation to recover the vehicle, military police exchanged fire with drug traffickers.
16/11/2024 – Drivers traveling on the Grajaú-Jacarepaguá Highway, near the Cardoso Fontes Federal Hospital, on Saturday afternoon (16/11), were victims of a mass robbery. The crime was observed by COR’s security cameras by CET-Rio technicians, who notified the Military Police.
17/11/2024 – A 63-year-old woman was found dead on Sunday afternoon (17/11) in the Bora Bora Condominium, on Avenida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. The Military Police reported that they were called to the incident by neighbors of the victim. According to the Corporation, the suspect would be her son. He was arrested.
18/11/2024 – An artifact caused a fire in an ATM of a Santander bank, located on Rua da Assembleia, in Centro, on Monday (18/11). The Civil Police Bomb Squad was activated. No one was injured. According to investigators, the initial forensic examination points to the use of a Molotov cocktail, but the evidence is still being analyzed.
19/11/2024 – The Civil Police arrested, on Tuesday (19/11), a US citizen accused of raping a vulnerable person in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. He had been under investigation since 2022. According to the agents, the accused was the owner of a school, where he would have committed the crimes of sexual abuse against several children. Still in 2022, the suspect even returned to the United States, which made it impossible for him to be arrested at that time.
20/11/2024 – A chase of teenagers suspected of stealing cell phones in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio, caused a rush and confusion on Avenida Venceslau Brás, in the late afternoon of Wednesday (20/11). According to the Military Police (PM), agents were carrying out routine patrols when they were requested by victims of cell phone theft. During the search, the team managed to arrest two teenagers. However, the cell phones were not found.
20/11/2024 – An intense shootout frightened residents of Padre Miguel, West Zone, on Wednesday afternoon (20/11). They reported to the Military Police (PM) that bandits would be gathering in the forest area of Rua Hélio do Amaral, indicating a possible confrontation between factions. With the arrival of the 14BPM agents (Bangu), the criminals started shooting and fled the scene.
21/11/2024 – A group of three French tourists had their cell phones stolen by criminals, on Thursday (21/11), in Lapa, Central Region. The device was recovered moments later by agents of the Security Present Center after the device’s GPS indicated the location. The bandits were arrested.
22/11/2024 – The Civil Police arrested, on Friday (22/11), in Quintino, North Zone, a suspect of acting as a “man of war” of the Pure Third Command (TCP) in the retaking of territories. According to the Corporation, he is also investigated for committing vehicle and cargo thefts in the Tijuca region.
23/11/2024 – The Red Command (CV) tried to invade the community of Rio das Pedras, the birthplace of the Militia, in the early hours of Saturday (23/11). In videos posted on social networks, it is possible to hear the sounds of gunfire captured by a resident. In the failed attempt, the traffickers abandoned four rifles. Two individuals were killed in the conflict, one in the Mata do Sertão/Brejo area and one in the lower part of the community.
23/11/2024 – Two people were shot in the Carobinha favela, West Zone of Rio, on Saturday (23/11). According to the first information, the victims were a man and a child, hit while in their car during a confrontation between rival criminal groups. Carobinha is dominated by militiamen and has been the target of attacks by the Red Command since the beginning of the year.
23/11/2024 – The former state secretary of the Military Police, Colonel Luiz Henrique Marinho Pires, had his car stolen, on Saturday (23/11), by criminals who were on two motorcycles, on the corner of Arquias Cordeiro and Martins Lage streets, in Engenho Novo, North Zone. The vehicle and its belongings were recovered by military police from the 3rd BPM (Méier), in the vicinity of the Arará favela, in Benfica, also in the North Zone.
24/11/2024 – A woman was dragged during an attempted robbery on Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva, in Leblon, South Zone, on Sunday (24/11) morning, when the woman was returning from work accompanied by a friend. Security cameras recorded the moment when the suspect on a motorcycle approached and tried to snatch the victim’s purse. The robber fled without taking anything.
24/11/2024 – A 41-year-old man was shot dead on Sunday (24/11), in Rio das Pedras, West Zone. It is not yet known under what circumstances the murder took place. The crime occurred about 24 hours after the same community was the scene of an attempted invasion by bandits from the Red Command (CV).
26/11/2024 – The police discovered and interdicted a clandestine warehouse of imported beverages on Rua Couto de Souza, in the community of Guarabu, on Ilha do Governador, North Zone, on Tuesday (26/11). In the action, three suspects were arrested. In addition, the military seized a rifle, two pistols, and drugs.
26/11/2024 – Pastor Silas Malafaia suffered an attempted robbery on Tuesday afternoon (26/11), in the neighborhood of Olaria, North Zone. The pastor’s security guards reacted by exchanging fire with the criminals. According to the Military Police, three off-duty PMs were in the vehicle and were injured. Malafaia did not suffer any injuries. The bandits fled.
26/11/2024 – Two unidentified men were shot dead on Tuesday (26/11) in Rio das Pedras, West Zone. There have been four murders in the community since the favela, with territories controlled by the militia, was the target of a failed invasion attempt by drug traffickers from the criminal faction Red Command (CV).
27/11/2024 – Two people were injured during an exchange of fire between military police and criminals on the Linha Amarela, at exit 9, in Bonsucesso, towards Barra da Tijuca, on Wednesday morning (27/11). According to the police, bandits stole the car of one of the victims who is a Military Police officer. During the escape, the suspects were surprised by a PM vehicle that was passing by and there was a confrontation.
27/11/2024 – An off-duty military police officer was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon (27/11), on Nilópolis Street, in Realengo, West Zone. The victim was accompanied by another PM when they were the targets of an attack. Security cameras recorded the moment when two criminals on a motorcycle passed by shooting at the agents.
28/11/2024 – A shooting attack in Rio das Pedras, West Zone, caused the death of a man and left two other people injured, on Thursday night (28/11). According to reports, the attack was carried out by drug traffickers from the Red Command, who intended to hit a militiaman in the region.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
