18/09/2022 – The former president of the Samba School Unidos de Vila Isabel, Wilson Vieira Alves, aka Moisés, was murdered on Avenida das Américas, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. The former leader was going to the Portela block with his wife when he was killed. A retired military, he was arrested in 2010 in Operation Alvará of the Federal Police, which investigated the mafia of slot machines and jogo do bicho.

23/09/2022 – The Civil Police arrested a woman for performing the ‘boa noite, Cinderella’ scam on elderly people in Ilha do Governador, North Zone. According to investigators, she was part of a church choir and used it to gain people’s trust. She approached as a rule elderly people, to apply the scams. She would invite them out and when the victims were distracted, she would spike their drinks. With that, she got bank passwords, bank accounts and applied her scams.
23/09/2022 – The Military Police rescued a truck driver who was being held hostage by robbers in Complexo da Maré, North Zone. Recovered, the load of medical and hospital products was valued at more than R$ 500 thousand. According to the police, the driver was kidnapped while passing along Avenida Brasil.
24/09/2022 – One man died and another was injured after being shot at in Catumbi, in downtown Rio. According to reports, a car went through the place shooting.
25/09/2022 – A military policeman was shot dead in Freguesia, West Zone. According to the first information collected by Military Police at the scene, a car stopped the victim’s motorcycle. Three hooded men disembarked and fired before fleeing.
26/09/2022 – A joint operation by the Civil and Military Police in Complexo da Maré, aimed at containing an attempted invasion, ended in intense shooting. Five people died and 26 were arrested. Linha Vermelha, Linha Amarela and Avenida Brasil were closed, drivers had to seek shelter, leaving their vehicles and hiding behind obstacles during the shootouts. 07 rifles, 08 pistols, a replica of a pistol / compressed air, a grenade, approximately one ton of marijuana and 20 stolen cars and motorcycles recovered.
Our analysis:
It is important to note that the operations are intended to arrest criminals or to seize drugs. But also, the mere presence of police officers in a crime-controlled area are enough for a confrontation to take place. When there is an operation happening the risk of being hit by stray bullets increase. That being said, it is important to look for protection in every situation involving shootouts, even shot into the air: once a bullet reaches its apogee it falls and may hurt people in a crowded area. It’s advised to try to locate the source of the shots or confrontation and hide behind a suitable obstacle. And, if possible, leave the area.
27/09/2022 – A woman’s body was found in a dump on Avenida dos Democráticos, in the Manguinhos neighborhood, North Zone.
28/09/2022 – A truck carrying energy drinks was robbed on the Washington Luiz Highway. In addition to the cargo, the criminals kidnapped the driver, wife and son and took them to Morro do Urubu, in the North Zone. The Military Police were called. In a statement, the PM reported that they were shot at in the community but managed to rescue the family and part of the stolen cargo.
28/09/2022 – Micaela Góes, presenter and content producer for the program Santa Ajuda, on the GNT channel, was robbed in Botafogo, in the South Zone. She had dropped off her daughters at school and was standing at a traffic light when she was approached by a gunman on a motorcycle. The criminal took the presenter’s cell phone and wedding rings.
Our analysis:
It is very important to avoid using your device when outside, on the streets, where there is a crowd. Indeed, it makes it easier for criminals to steal your device and to disappear among other pedestrians. If your device gets stolen, it is essential to report the crime because this will, first of all, formally inform the authorities about your situation and it can help to recover your phone. In addition, it will also help the police follow the criminal trends and know where to do operations, reinforce security and what to expect. Below, a summarized procedures to be followed when a cell phone is lost or stolen:
• The device must have its data immediately erased through the manufacturer’s application
• The bank(s) must be informed immediately to block apps, passwords and accounts
• The cell phone chip must be immediately cancelled, but first erase the data
• The phone’s IMEI must be blocked – an official complaint (BO) may be required by the phone company
• A crime report should be filed, prefer to do online (Boletim Eletrônico de Ocorrência)
29/09/2022 – A man was arrested in the act by agents of the Botafogo Battalion when he was trying to steal a vehicle with the help of a tow truck on Rua Marechal Niemeyer, in Botafogo, in the South Zone.
