Public Exam
Part of the personnel of the new battalions will be recruits. They are approved in a public exam and must graduate, in 2025, from the Military Police Academy. The rest of the personnel should be formed by police officers transferred from other units.
Nova Iguaçu
Nova Iguaçu has more than 800,000 inhabitants and is currently patrolled by the Batalhão de Mesquita, a neighboring city. Between January and May 2024, the city suffered from an increase in the number of robberies, compared to the same period in 2023. According to statistics from the Public Security Institute (ISP), there was a 31% increase in vehicle thefts, 89% in bus thefts, and 82% in cell phone thefts.
Patrols in the North Zone will be divided
The Jacarezinho battalion is part of the planning of the Integrated City program. With the new unit, the area would be separated from the 3rd BPM (Méier), currently responsible for patrolling 23 neighborhoods.
São Gonçalo
In São Gonçalo, a city with over 1 million inhabitants according to ISP statistics, the city saw a 68% increase in the cell phone theft crime rate in the first five months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. The 7th BPM, currently responsible for patrolling, will have its area divided, with part of it being under the responsibility of the new unit.
Analysis:
The announcement of three new battalions for the Military Police in Rio de Janeiro, set for completion by mid-2025, is a critical response to escalating crime rates in specific areas. These battalions in Nova Iguaçu, Favela do Jacarezinho, and São Gonçalo aim to redistribute patrolling responsibilities and strengthen law enforcement presence.
Nova Iguaçu has witnessed a significant rise in thefts, necessitating focused police efforts to alleviate the current burden on the neighboring Batalhão de Mesquita. The Jacarezinho battalion, part of the Integrated City program, will allow the 3rd BPM (Méier) to concentrate on fewer neighborhoods, enhancing crime prevention. In São Gonçalo, with a notable increase in cell phone thefts, the new battalion will share responsibilities with the 7th BPM (Alcântara), improving police response and coverage.
The construction of new Military Police battalions in Rio de Janeiro is essential for tackling escalating crime rates and enhancing public safety in areas like Nova Iguaçu, Jacarezinho, and São Gonçalo. These regions have experienced significant increases in crimes, overwhelming current police resources. New battalions will improve police presence, response times, and community engagement. The expected outcomes include reduced crime rates and heightened public trust in law enforcement.
