The Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) determined, on Friday (22/09), that all police officers who work in Operation Escudo, in Baixada Santista, must use body cameras attached to their uniform. The Public Defender’s Office of São Paulo and the NGO Conectas Human Rights filed a lawsuit, on 5 September, requesting mandatory use of the equipment for civil and military police officers. Furthermore, the state must establish some parameters for the actions of officers around schools and daycare centres. They must only occur in exceptional cases, respecting the entry and exit times of the locations, in addition to providing prior justification. Operation Escudo began after the death of police officer Patrick Bastos Reis, from Rondas Ostensivas Tobias Aguiar (ROTA), on July 27. By the beginning of September, the number of deaths as a result of police action had reached 27.
