02/02/2024 – A Police officer was shot dead in the face during a patrol in Bom Retiro, West Santos. According to the police report, he entered alone in a tiny street of the slum and was received by short distance shots. He was taken to the ER but died upon his arrival. He was the older brother of another policeman who was murdered in 2018. The detectives in charge are investigating the case based on the officer´s dashcam.

05/02/2024 – Off-duty police officer reacted to a robbery attempt and wounded one bandit in Marapé, central region of Santos. The victim was walking next to the channel when 3 suspects on bicycles announced the robbery. The officer reacted and wounded one of them. In the action, the officer was pistol-whipped in the head. The accomplices of the wounded bandit ran away with a gold collar and a gold bracelet and without their bicycles.
07/05/2024 – A police officer was shot dead in São Manoel, West region of Santos. He and his partner were going to another place when they were called to intervene in a compound in São Manoel. On the spot, there was a shootout, and both officers were severely wounded. One died on the spot and his partner is still being healed at the hospital. According to the police report, one of the suspects jumped from the 4th floor and died, while the other one has been wounded and is also being healed at the hospital.
14/02/2024 – Elderly found a corpse at the front door of this house in Vila Matias, Centre area of Santos. According to the first elements, the man answered another man on the intercom of his residence, alleging he received a package. When he went to open his door, he found the corpse. According to the police, the body was enrolled in a blanket and had no apparent trauma. The victim´s ID is not known. The Forensics are in charge of the investigation.
15/02/2024 – A police operation in Rádio Clube, West Santos, ended in an intense shootout and a wounded resident. The Corporation had organized an operation targeting drug trafficking in the slum. As they were entering the local, they divided the forces. A team stayed at the entrance of the slum encountered various suspects and started the shootout. The suspects fled through the residents’ houses. In the chase, a man was injured by a shot in the arm and told the police he received the bullet from a suspect´s weapon. He was rescued and is out of danger.
16/02/2024 – During an operation against illegal trading of cell phones, the police seized more than 500 devices in Rádio Clube, west Santos. According to the Corporation, the detectives seized 330 devices in a first local, a supposed technical assistance store, and 192 in another commercial spot. None could present client invoices or justify the origin of the devices. The owners of the stores were arrested and charged with crimes against consumers´ rules.
17/02/2024 – A man was arrested in possession of cell phones used to monitor police activities, in Morro de São Bento, central area of Santos. According to the police, a patrol was called to check a drug trafficking denouncement when the suspect saw them and ran away through the bush, but other officers were already waiting for him on the other side of the district. He was caught with more than R$ 58k, an important quantity of various types of drugs, and 14 cell phones used to monitor police activities. The bandit was placed in custody.
19/02/2024 – An intense shootout left one dead and 2 workers wounded in Morro de São Bento, central area of Santos. According to the police, a patrol went to the local to check a denouncement of drug trafficking and was received with shots. But the residents of the slum said the police arrived already shooting. One suspect was hit in the head and died at the hospital. Yet, the 2 workers were wounded by the debris of shots. They said they identified themselves as workers but still, the officers continued the shooting. This shootout occurred amid the “Operação Verão” (Operation Summer) and totaled 28 deaths until now.
26/02/2024 – A man was arrested in Saboó, central area of Santos, after pretending to be a detective. According to the police, officers controlled him after a denouncement call. In his high-brand car, they found an important quantity of drugs, illegal medication pills, and illegal anabolic steroids. As the cops approached him, he alleged to be a detective, but he presented a false distinctive and a pistol. The man was placed in custody and charged with corruption, drug trafficking, and falsification, use and usurpation of public ID.
27/02/2024 – A man offered R$ 20k to police officers to escape from prison in Aparecida, south area of Santos. During a routine patrol, the officers noticed the man with a suspect plastic bag in his hand. As he saw the cops, he threw away his bag but was flagged by the patrol. After a discrete surveillance, the suspect was arrested. The officers found R$ 1k on the man and retrieved the plastic bag where they found drugs. The man was placed in custody and charged with drug trafficking and corruption.
28/02/2024 – Former TV newscaster was caught red-handed for drug trafficking in Vila Matias, central area of Santos. According to the detectives, the operation permitted the arrest of 9 suspects, including the journalist, and the seizure of indoor cannabis greenhouses and an important quantity of drug. The investigation pointed out the journalist as being a supplier of the traffic.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of Embaré, Ponto da Praia, Campo Grande, Rádio Clube, Downtown and Estuário.
- Never visit neighborhoods on the hills, such as Morro de São Bento, Jabaquara, Saboo and others.
- The waterfront has many incidents of opportunistic thefts, never display wealth and avoid walks there during the night.
- Residences in the of Pompeia, Gonzaga, Boqueirão, Embaré, Aparecida, Estuário and Ponta da Praia are frequently targeted by thieves. Make sure your building is well protected.
- Be cautious at all times, including in areas perceived as safe.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, mobile phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers if attacked.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as they might be armed or resort to violence.
- In case of kidnapping:
- Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence, and do not lie or provide false information to your kidnappers.
- Bear in mind that the vast majority of kidnappings are financially motivated, and that negotiation may be lengthy.
