03/01/2024 – City Hall and Metropolitan Secretary of Health launched a joint operation with a private health company to fight propagation of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The task force began the operation in Aparecida, South Santos, and will control and clean 5 priority neighbourhoods until end of January, final schedule of the operation.

05/01/2024 – A 43-year-old Slovenian was executed in Embaré, South Santos while bicycling with his child in a bike seat and his wife. The crime occurred in the early night when the bandit went directly to the victim as the family was entering their residence. The victim received various shots and dropped the bike with his son. He has been rescued but died during the transfer. Nobody was arrested. (Update 12/01/2024) It was later found that the victim was allegedly a Serbian national carrying a fake identity of a Slovenian and that he was on the run for being a hired gun.
05/01/2024 – A lawyer and his wife were arrested in Boqueirão, South Santos, for being heads of the “Disk Droga” of Santos, a hotline for drug selling and delivery. The police went to them by gathering pieces of information from a criminal arrested by the end of December 2023. The investigation pointed out that the lawyer is a recidivist and has recently left the penitentiary for the same record.
10/01/2024 – While fulfilling a search and seize warrant in Rádio Clube, West Santos, the police arrested the warehouseman of the local gang. As the officers arrived on the spot, the criminal started the shootout and was wounded. He has been rescued and arrested. The cops seized 9mm guns, 4kg of drugs, and ballistic gear.
13/01/2024 – A 20-year-old former soldier was shot dead during a police intervention in Vila dos Criadores, Alemoa, West Santos. The officers went into a favela after a man informed them of being the victim of a “crime court” and gave information about a drug-selling point. The citizens said the police entered the area shooting without being threatened and the veteran received a bullet in the throat and another in the shoulder. A friend of his also was severely injured by two bullets in the leg and had a cardio-respiratory arrest. The investigation is in progress.
14/01/2024 – A criminal escaped from the police during his transfer to custody trial in the Centre of Santos. The man fled while the police vehicle was parking and is now a fugitive. Internal affairs are following the investigations.
19/01/2024 – After a pursuit and a shootout with the police in Monte Serrat, North of Santos, bandits abandoned the car they used to commit robberies. The action began when an off-duty policeman saw 5 armed suspects in a car. He then decided to follow the vehicle and called his battalion for support. At a red signal, as a patrol decided to approach the suspects, they started the shootout and tried to run away. Just before entering the Monte Serrat slum, the bandits were blocked by trashcans in the middle of the street. They abandoned the vehicle and started to run to the slum while still shooting at the police. Nobody was wounded nor arrested. The car was seized, and the officers found it had been robbed in December 2023 and was used to commit robberies in Santos and São Vicente.
21/01/2024 – During an operation, the police arrested 2 suspects and seized a hundred cell phones and tablets in Vila Mathias, Campo Grande, and Marapé, South of Santos. The stolen devices were used for their parts to repair other devices. The suspects were arrested for concealment.
31/01/2024 – The Junkyard owner was arrested for theft and receiving in Vila Nova, Central region of Santos. According to the police, the operation was launched with the cooperation of the energy and water companies and metropolitan cemetery services. The suspect was arrested in possession of energy and water registers and grave brass plates.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of Embaré, Ponto da Praia, Campo Grande, Rádio Clube, Downtown and Estuário.
- Never visit neighborhoods on the hills, such as Morro de São Bento, Jabaquara, Saboo and others.
- The waterfront has many incidents of opportunistic thefts, never display wealth and avoid walks there during the night.
- Residences in the of Pompeia, Gonzaga, Boqueirão, Embaré, Aparecida, Estuário and Ponta da Praia are frequently targeted by thieves. Make sure your building is well protected.
- Be cautious at all times, including in areas perceived as safe.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, mobile phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers if attacked.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as they might be armed or resort to violence.
- In case of kidnapping:
- Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence, and do not lie or provide false information to your kidnappers.
- Bear in mind that the vast majority of kidnappings are financially motivated, and that negotiation may be lengthy.
