28/03/2024 – A Portuguese citizen was arrested for homicide in Capão Redondo, South SP. According to the detectives, the man committed his crime in Portugal and was under an Interpol international warrant. The detectives were investigating another case when the criminal fled as he saw the cops. As the detectives controlled him with false documents, the man confessed to be on the run.

29/03/2024 – A doctor was shot dead in his car during a robbery attempt in Jardim Elisa Maria, North SP. Witnesses told the Police that 3 men were attacking the victim when they heard the shots. The bandits fled towards a party in the neighborhood. According to the detectives, the victim would have fallen into a “Love Scam”. The investigation is in progress.
29/03/2024 – An off-duty police officer was shot dead by another officer in Vila Andrade, South SP. According to the first elements, a routine patrol saw the victim pointing his gun at a car and interpreted it as a robbery. The driver said the victim was controlling him as he was finding strange roundtrips in the dangerous district. The driver alleged he was with GPS problems.
02/04/2024 – A mass robbery resulted in a wound in Morumbi, South SP. Two bandits on a motorcycle took advantage of the traffic jams to commit the crime. Two off-duty detectives were passing by the spot and shot one of the suspects in the leg. The other criminal fled on the motorcycle.
02/04/2024 – The man who killed his daughter on 24/03/24 in Bela Vista was found dead in his cell in Pinheiros, South SP. The man has been arrested two days after having strangled his daughter and abandoned her burnt body in a street hole. According to the Public Security Secretary, he and another detainee were discussing when he was asphyxiated by his mate. He died at the hospital.
03/04/2024 – A 5-year-old child was wounded during a shootout in Americanópolis, South SP. According to the Public Security Secretary, a routine patrol noticed a car with two suspects inside. After a brief pursuit, the suspects tried to run away while shooting at the cops, who replied. One of the men was found dead a bit later. His colleague fled.
03/04/2024 – Federal agents reacted to a robbery attempt in Pinheiros, South SP. Three Federal agents were passing in a street when two bandits announced the robbery. The agents replied announcing themselves as Federal agents and the bandits started the shootout. One of them was wounded and arrested, and the other fled.
05/04/2024 – A motorcycle was robbed in Vila Andrade, South SP and the pursuit ended in one killed in the Paraisópolis slum. According to the Police, a patrol was called to check a carjacking on a motorcycle a few streets from the slum. Another patrol found the bandits on two stolen motorcycles. After a pursuit, as the two suspects fell from their vehicle, one of them just ran away, but the other opened fire on the officers who replied. Participants of a funk party tried to protest the action, but the cops shot pepper grenades to disperse the crowd.
06/04/2024 – A young woman was violently assaulted by a Police Officer in Luz, the historical center of SP. The scene was recorded by a passing by and shows the officer threatening the victim and slapping her in the face. According to the Public Security Secretary, the officer was removed from the street service during the investigation.
07/04/2024 – A bandit stole cars in Higienópolis, West SP. The scene was caught by security cameras of the district: he walked quietly in the streets of the neighborhood, noticed some cars, and broke their windows to steal what was inside. According to residents of the neighborhood, the man would be a regular of the area.
09/04/2024 – SP Public Ministry arrested bus company CEOs for suspected links with First Capital Command (PCC). The investigation pointed out that the companies were used to launder money for the gang. In one of the suspects’ houses, the detectives found various weapons, cash, and jewelry. In all, the operation needed the action of more than 300 cops to serve 52 warrants in SP and other cities of the State.
09/04/2024 – A man killed an architect, burnt his house, and stole his dog in Vila Sônia, South SP. The crime occurred on 30/03, and the firemen considered a simple arson. However, the Civil Police found that the fire was criminal to cover the architect’s death, and arrested the suspect. He confessed to the crime and said they had a relationship. According to the detectives, the man was driving the victim’s car and used his credit card. He also stole the architect’s dog and gave it to his mother.
13/04/2024 – Individuals drove by shooting at a couple of transsexual women of Estrada de Itapecerica, Capão Redondo neighborhood, in the South Zone of São Paulo. One of the victims was hit and died later. The incident took place just after a funk party, during which the two victims argued with the suspects. One man was later arrested.
14/04/2024 – TV host Silvia Poppovic was robbed and assaulted on Sunday (14/54), in the Higienópolis neighborhood. The robber managed to escape. A ring was taken and she had some cuts and bruises.
17/04/2024 – A man was shot by an off-duty firefighter without a uniform inside Estação da Luz, in the center of São Paulo, after jumping the Metro turnstile. The case occurred on Wednesday afternoon (17/04). The firefighter approached the man right after he jumped the turnstile to avoid paying for a ticket. The two argued and the agent drew his gun and shot the victim in the legs, who fell. According to a survey by Midia sources, from 2022 to 2024 there have been at least 38 cases of violence involving passengers or employees at subway and train stations in São Paulo.
17/04/2024 – On Wednesday (17/04), a seven-year-old boy was injured by a shot fired during a police operation in Rua Ernest Renan, Paraisópolis, in the South Zone of São Paulo. Police forces deny responsibility. However, after the operation, videos of officers supposedly collecting evidence at the crime scene were disclosed online.
17/04/2024 – An operation by the Criminal Investigations State Department (Deic) seized high-cost medicines and arrested the owner of a pharmacy in Guaianases neighborhood, São Paulo East Zone. He is suspected of purchasing and selling medicines stolen from other establishments. The seized medicines include pens used to treat obesity, hormones, black stripe tranquilizers, and central nervous system stimulant medicines.
21/04/2024 – Publicist Yuri Costa, 23, disappeared in the early hours of last Sunday (21) after going to the gay sauna Chilli hotel, in the São Paulo central area. Yuri was found on Monday (22/04) morning without any type of ID on Rua General Osório, in Santa Ifigênia, and taken by ambulance from Samu to UPA (Emergency Care Unit) Vergueiro, also in the central region, where he died. The possible cause of death is indicated as insufficient oxygen in the blood (hypoxemia) and excessive loss of blood or fluids (hypovolemic shock).
23/04/2024 – A police patrol violently approached a man who had called 911. The man rents a house and had been threatened by the ex-husband of his landlord, who was armed with a knife and ordered him to pay rent for a month that had already been paid. Still, police turned against the tenant, immobilized him, and used pepper spray on his face. The officers were removed from street duty.
23/04/2024 – On Monday morning (23/04), an armed man robbed a driver while he was stopped at a red light on Rua Abílio Soares, Paraíso neighborhood, São Paulo’s South Zone. The criminal took valuable items, such as a cell phone, wristwatch, and more. He was not arrested.
24/04/2024 – A 32-year-old man died after falling from a building in the center of São Paulo, on Tuesday afternoon (24), in a Military Police action in the region. According to the police report, he died while attempting to escape the officers who had invaded an apartment where he and another man would store stolen cell phones that were resold to clients. The police officers went to the property, spoke to the property manager, and entered the building after receiving a hint from another Senegalese.
24/04/2024 – A clandestine cable TV factory was the target of an action by Deic (State Department of Criminal Investigations), on Tuesday morning (24/04), in Canindé neighborhood, in São Paulo’s East Zone. The police seized several TV Box equipment, the so-called “gato net”, responsible for illegally capturing and transmitting the programming of subscription channel companies. The devices were sold in popular shopping centers spread across the city of São Paulo. By using such devices, clients become vulnerable to hacker attacks.
25/04/2024 – A group of 100 immigrants protested against the death of Serigne Mourballa Mbaye, 36, a Senegalese immigrant who died after falling from the 6th floor of a building occupied by homeless people. Friends of the Senegalese man and African immigrants who frequent Guaianases Street, in the Campos Elíseos neighborhood, where he died, say the case involves racism and abuse of authority. Two police officers entered the building without a judicial warrant.
25/04/2024 – On Wednesday (24/04), the Federal Police in São Paulo arrested four more suspects for exchanging luggage tags at Guarulhos International Airport, in Greater São Paulo. The tags were put in other bags filled with drugs to be transported to destinations in Europe. The people arrested – three men and one woman – are accused of having been enticed by international drug trafficking gangs to participate in the scheme to send narcotics abroad. Among those detained by the PF are three employees of a private company called Orbital – who work in the airport’s restricted baggage area – and a woman who provided support to the group from outside the terminals.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Attention when walking downtown São Paulo, especially in Liberdade and Sé districts. At night, these regions are no-go zones.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate of some locations in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate criminals, who do not hesitate to open fire.
- Avoid, if possible, circulating through the neighborhoods in the East Zone and peripheral neighborhoods in other zones due to the high rates of various crimes.
- Pay attention when trying to meet new people on the internet as criminals use the dating apps and social networks to apply scams.
- Due to several police operations, drug users previously concentrated in a region called “Cracolândia” have spread across downtown, leading to an increase in petty crimes. Hence, avoid walking around with your cell phone in your hand, in addition to wearing jewels and expensive watches.
- The number of express kidnappings has increased lately due to a new method (PIX) that allows people to easily transfer money using bank apps. Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence.
- Attention to the windows when inside a vehicle. Keep them closed, as criminals use heavy traffic to rob passengers that expose valuables.
