The Sou Paz Institute published a study stating that 68% of women victims of femicide in the state of São Paulo were killed at home. The Sou da Paz study analyzed all 124 cases of femicide registered in the database of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) in the first half of 2024 in the state. Of the total, 85 women were murdered in their homes, which represents 68%.

The city of São Paulo had on average 17 suspected drug traffickers arrested or apprehended per day during the first half of the year. In absolute numbers, security forces detained 3,100 men and women, both in flagrante delicto (2,945) and through judicial warrants (166) in the period. The number of arrests of those involved in trafficking is also reflected in the number of drug seizures: more than 20.7 tons were collected and destroyed in the first six months of this year, including crack, cocaine, marijuana, hashish, and other illicit substances.
02/08/2024 – A man was arrested for attacking a homeless person with a machete on Friday afternoon (2), around Ibirapuera Park, in the Vila Mariana region. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), Military Police officers were on patrol when they saw the attacker with the victim under an overpass and immediately stopped the attack. The reason behind the incident was not released.
03/08/2024 – A group of at least 12 friends who were at a picnic at Villa Lobos Park, in the West Zone of São Paulo, were the target of a collective robbery on Saturday night (03). The group was celebrating a birthday when they were approached by two young men. One of the suspects was armed and demanded the group sit on their knees and hand over their personal belongings.
06/08/2024 – Multiple police agencies carried out an operation in Cracolândia, a region known for the sale and consumption of drugs in downtown São Paulo, on Tuesday (6). The operation aimed to arrest three metropolitan civil guards, a former agent of the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM), and two drug traffickers. According to the investigation, the guards and the former guard are suspected of being part of a militia accused of extorting money from merchants in the area.
09/08/2024 – An exchange of fire between agents of the Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (ROTA) and robbers left at least three suspects dead on the morning of Friday (9) in Alto de Pinheiros, an upscale neighborhood in the West Zone of São Paulo. Another accomplice of the gang, who was not injured in the shooting, was arrested by the police. Four weapons that were with the bandits were seized. According to police officers, they were patrolling the region when they received a tip that an armed gang intended to rob a nearby residence. Arriving near the scene, the PMs said that four criminals shot at the agents, who retaliated.
11/08/2024 – An off-duty military police officer shot and killed a 21-year-old man who was trying to rob passengers in a car in Jabaquara, South Zone of São Paulo, last Saturday afternoon (10). A security camera on Barrania Street recorded the moment when the criminal arrived on a motorcycle and tried to rob passengers who were in a white car. The police officer who was at the scene saw the action and shot at least ten times at the suspect, who tried to flee.
13/08/2024 – A five-year-old boy died after falling from a building in the Sé region, on Monday (12). According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP), the child was rescued but did not resist his injuries. During a patrol in the region, municipal guards were called by two women, who had the injured child in their arms. The case was registered as a suspicious death and is being investigated.
13/08/2024 – Operation Tashi Delek, carried out on Tuesday (13) by the Military Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo, reached the top of a criminal faction that used fake websites to scam victims. According to the investigations, these online pages received, in six months, more than 137,000 hits and deceived people from all over Brazil. More than R$ 14,000 in cash, 21 cell phones, as well as USB sticks, computers, tablets, and jewelry were seized. Five suspects were arrested.
14/08/2024 – A garage used as a motorcycle dismantling was discovered by the Military Police on Wednesday (14) during routine policing in the Jardim Miriam neighborhood, on the border between Diadema and São Paulo. At the site, there were stolen parts from vehicles. The PM team was patrolling the neighborhood when they noticed several motorcycle parts inside a garage, appearing to be dismantled. A man who was at the scene was approached by the police. According to the PM, the suspect bought the stolen motorcycles, dismantled them, and sold the parts over the internet. The suspect was arrested.
15/08/2024 – The Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo indicted on Thursday (15) two metropolitan civil guards of the city of São Paulo and two other former agents on suspicion of participating in a militia that operated in the region of Cracolândia, in the center of São Paulo. The former agents and guards are accused by the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO/Núcleo Capital) of forming a private militia to commit concussion crimes against merchants in the central region of the city. Through the investigations, prosecutors discovered that the guards received money from the merchants through deposits in their accounts or those of relatives and third parties.
15/08/2024 – The Federal Police carried out on Thursday (15) morning in São Paulo an operation to dismantle a criminal organization specializing in currency evasion and money laundering through cryptocurrencies. “Operation Aluir” is the third development of “Operation Colossus”, which in January 2024 revealed the existence of a billionaire scheme in which financial resources of criminal origin were the object of currency evasion and money laundering. In the operation on Thursday (15), the PF served five search and seizure warrants and two preventive arrest warrants against the main members of the criminal organization arrested in January. Two others investigated also had their preventive detention decreed but were not located. The Federal Court also decreed the freezing of assets and assets of those investigated.
15/08/2024 – The Civil Police arrested on Thursday (15) six members of a gang specializing in the theft of high-capacity motorcycles. The arrest took place in Itaquera, in the east of São Paulo. The targets were identified from investigations into attacks against motorcyclists. In addition to the motorcycles found at the addresses, helmets, accessories, and parts were collected.
18/08/2024 – Four men were arrested on Sunday night (18) during the robbery of a pharmacy on Avenida Professor Vicente Rao, in Santo Amaro, South Zone of São Paulo. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), military police were called to attend the occurrence and at the scene, they found that three individuals had robbed a pharmacy and then fled. The PMs began searching the region and found the suspects.
20/08/2024 – On Tuesday afternoon (20), armed motorcyclists shot a driver inside his car and in front of his daughter’s school in the East Zone of São Paulo. The homicide took place on Roberto Said Street, in Itaim Paulista. A security camera recorded the moment that two men on a motorcycle approached the vehicle parked on the road. The pillion of the motorcycle pulls out his gun and shoots, shattering the window glass. Then another armed motorcyclist appears, who also shoots. The bandits fled without taking anything from the driver.
20/08/2024 – Seven people were taken hostage on Tuesday night (20) by two armed men who tried to steal a construction site in Sacomã, in the South Zone of São Paulo. The victims worked on a construction site in Vila Reencontro, a housing project of the city hall aimed at families who are homeless. The police were called and arrived at the scene when the two men tried to flee. With one of them, a firearm was seized. The police also located a van with six coils of copper cables. The cargo was seized and delivered and valued at R$ 50,000. The two suspects were arrested, while 3 accomplices fled.
20/08/2024 – Police officers from the State Department of Criminal Investigations (Deic) helped teams from the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul to launch, on Tuesday (20), an operation against a gang that profited from requests for false donations to the victims of the climate disaster in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. So far, two men, aged 28 and 30, have been arrested in the east zone of São Paulo. Eight search and seizure warrants are served. According to the investigations, the duo created a website to offer the distribution of water through water trucks in the cities of Rio Grande do Sul, affected by the floods. The scammers publicized the action to receive financial contributions, but the service was not provided to the victims. It is estimated that those involved got almost R$ 50,000 with the scam.
20/08/2024 – On Tuesday (20), the Civil and Military Police launched Operation Rescue, in the region of the open scenes of drug use, in downtown São Paulo. In the action, four suspects were arrested. In addition, at least one hundred offenders were identified as failing to comply with judicial measures. During the action, which had the support of the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM), the police seized a large number of dangerous objects, such as knives, scissors, and other utensils.
21/08/2024 – Two men were arrested on Wednesday (21), in downtown São Paulo, with more than 350 cell phones. According to the Civil Police, both are suspected of acting as receivers of stolen or stolen devices in the region. Agents of the 37th Police District (Campo Limpo) launched the 3rd phase of Operation Ndagaan, aimed at identifying an organized network of cell phone receivers operating in the center of the capital of São Paulo. Search and seizure warrants were served at two addresses in the region. 23/08/2024 – A group of five young men and a delivery man were robbed on Thursday night (23) at the door of a condominium in the Tatuapé region, East Zone of São Paulo. They were surrendered by two armed criminals and forced to lie on the ground, face down, and hand over their wallets, cell phones, and watches. From the windows, neighbors who witnessed the robbery shouted for help, demanded the presence of the police, and recorded the robbery that took place on Gregório de Matos Street, in Água Rasa. The two suspects fled on a motorcycle.
23/08/2024 – Three criminals broke in, on Friday (23), a condominium in Tatuapé, in the East Zone of São Paulo, and robbed a resident. Security cameras at the exit of the garage recorded the moment they left the building. In the images, it is possible to see that an employee stops and tries to talk to them. Two of them get into the white vehicle. Moments later a man gets out of the car and the employee runs. The driver accelerates and breaks the gate. They took jewelry, watches, and belongings valued at R$ 150,000. The police were patrolling the area and arrested the trio.
24/08/2024 – The Military Police was called, around 10:00 on Saturday (24), for an occurrence of gunfire on Rua Doutor Bento Teobaldo Ferraz, near the train line between the Barra Funda and Luz stations. A vehicle was moved to the scene but no suspects were found. There is no information about injuries.
25/08/2024 – A man was arrested on Sunday morning (25), after throwing a fire extinguisher on the platform of the Clínicas subway station, in the Sumaré neighborhood, and assaulting a security agent with a knife. According to information from the SP Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the Metro agent was injured while trying to restrain the uncontrolled aggressor. Two knives were seized from him.
26/08/2024 – Four suspects on the run exchanged fire with the Military Police (PM) on Sunday afternoon (26) in the parking lot of a supermarket located on Rodovia Raposo Tavares, in the west of São Paulo. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the incident began when military police identified that the vehicle in which the suspects were had been used in a robbery. At that moment, the group accelerated and broke the approach. To try to mislead the police, the suspects entered the parking lot of a supermarket, but lost control of the vehicle and collided with a vehicle. Still according to the SSP, after the crash, the four men got out of the car, three of them armed, and an exchange of fire began. Two suspects were arrested. Two others managed to escape.
26/08/2024 – Three young people were arrested red-handed for the kidnapping of a man on Monday afternoon (26), in the community of Jardim Eliane, East Zone of São Paulo. The victim was taken during a fake date scheduled on a dating app. According to the police, the suspects aged 19, 20, and 22 would be involved in at least two other kidnappings.
26/08/2024 – Three men who were part of a gang specializing in the “love scam” were arrested in flagrante delicto by the Cybercrime Division (DCCiber) on Monday (26). The team located the captivity and rescued a victim in Jardim Fernandes, east of São Paulo. The investigation began after the intelligence sector received information about the kidnapping of a man, who was allegedly taken by criminals to a shack in the Vila Elaine community. During the searches, the police suspected a house with the gate open. Upon inspecting the place, the team caught the criminals fleeing through the window to the roof of the neighboring house. Inside the house, the agents found and rescued the victim. In captivity, the criminals demanded bank transfers from the victim.
27/08/2024 – A 41-year-old man, suspected of leading a criminal faction was arrested on Tuesday (27), in the region of Campos Elíseos, in downtown São Paulo. In the action, two luxury cars, valued at almost R$ 500,000, four gold watches, jewelry, four cell phones, and more than 30 portions of drugs, including marijuana and cocaine, with precision scales and various packages used to package the drugs, were seized. Civil police officers from the Special Corps for the Repression of Organized Crime (Cerco) went to the suspect’s house to serve search and seizure warrants. According to the investigations, the man is part of the top leadership of a criminal organization, being one of those responsible for the control and distribution of drugs in the region.
30/08/2024 – A man was arrested in the early hours of Friday (30), in Sacomã, after the police found several weapons and bags of cocaine in the property where he lived. According to the investigations, the place functioned as a hiding place for trafficking. Revolvers, rifles, and ammunition were seized, in addition to drug packages. The police arrived at the residence after receiving a complaint of aggression.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Attention when walking downtown São Paulo, especially in Liberdade and Sé districts. At night, these regions are no-go zones.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate of some locations in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate criminals, who do not hesitate to open fire.
- Avoid, if possible, circulating through the neighborhoods in the East Zone and peripheral neighborhoods in other zones due to the high rates of various crimes.
- Pay attention when trying to meet new people on the internet as criminals use the dating apps and social networks to apply scams.
- Due to several police operations, drug users previously concentrated in a region called “Cracolândia” have spread across downtown, leading to an increase in petty crimes. Hence, avoid walking around with your cell phone in your hand, in addition to wearing jewels and expensive watches.
- The number of express kidnappings has increased lately due to a new method (PIX) that allows people to easily transfer money using bank apps. Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence.
- Attention to the windows when inside a vehicle. Keep them closed, as criminals use heavy traffic to rob passengers that expose valuables.
