According to data released by the Sou da Paz Institute and the Public Security Secretariat of the State of São Paulo (SSP-SP), off-duty police killed more people in 2022. The deaths committed by off-duty officers remained stable, with a slight increase. There were 144 registrations in 2021 and 158 last year (2022), which represents an increase of 10%.

03/02/2023 – A 28-year-old businesswoman was found dead inside her car on Avenida Arquiteto Vilanova Artigas, in Sapopemba, East Zone. According to the Military Police, the woman was located with a cut on her neck and punctures in her stomach. A witness who was passing through the area was surprised by the presence of the car parked on the sidewalk for a long time and called the police. When officers arrived, they also triggered the Fire Department, which found the victim’s death at the scene. Police arrested a friend and a driver on suspicion of the crime.
06/02/2023 – A man died after scheduling a date with a woman through a relationship app. He was surprised by criminals and shot, on Rua Máximo Barbosa, in Jardim Taipas, North Zone. The man went to the address in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of the alleged woman. Moments later, the victim was approached by two criminals who announced the robbery. The victim tried to react and accelerated the vehicle, when one of them shot.
07/02/2023 – A man was arrested, and three teenagers apprehended after invading a luxury motorcycle dealership, on Avenida dos Bandeirantes, in the Vila Olímpia region, South Zone. According to the Military Police, the trio of teenagers broke the facade windows and invaded the store. The group tried to steal several motorcycles, even knocking some of the vehicles to the ground.
07/02/2023 – A digital influencer’s cell phone stolen on Avenida Paulista, downtown São Paulo. Criminals stole unlocked cell phone while she was using it, so they got access to all apps.
08/02/2023 – A group was arrested, and hostages were released during an attempt to rob a bank branch, in Vila Mariana, West Zone. The Military Police were called at 08:38 to Rua Domingos de Morais, where the police located the first person involved outside the branch. Teams carried out the siege and, upon entering the bank, found three other criminals taking five employees as hostages. The group surrendered the employees and removed their belongings, such as cell phones and wallets. The vigilante’s gun was also taken by the men.
08/02/2023 – The police is investigating whether the crime that took place inside a motorcycle workshop in Parque Arariba, South Zone, is linked to a war between criminal factions operating in the region. The target of the criminals would be a civil police officer, who owns the trade and who returned the shots at the time of the attack. Two people died and one is hospitalized.
10/02/2023 – A clash between organized supporters of Corinthians and Palmeiras on Avenida das Juntas Provisórias and Avenida do Estado, in the Ipiranga neighborhood, South Zone, left two people seriously injured. In several posts and reports on social media, fans said it would have been an ambush by the Palmeiras organized supporters. A bus with Corinthians fans was stoned and practically destroyed.
10/02/2023 – Civil Police carried out an operation against suspects of committing the love scam. The gang deceived women who thought they were having a relationship with a foreign man. Four people were arrested. According to investigations, one of the gang members gets the victim’s phone number and sends her a message. Throughout the conversation, which lasts for months, the criminal manages to make the woman fall in love. He makes the victim believe that he is a foreigner by sending audios with declarations of love in English and Spanish. After some time, the boyfriend says he is going to Brazil. Combined the trip, the scammer says he will send some luggage in advance and asks the victim to pick it up for him. At this point in the scam, other members take over and contact the woman to inform her that they are employees of a carrier. And that, to get the material, the woman needs to pay a fee. With this, the gang gets high amounts of money and receives millionaire values from several victims who fall into the scam.
