The number of children and adolescents living on the streets has grown 12 times in the city of São Paulo in the last 10 years. According to the federal government’s Unified Registry (CadÚnico), in 2024, 3,961 children under 18 years of age live on the streets, which represents 46% of the total number of children and adolescents living on the streets in Brazil. Violence and impairment of cognitive development are some of the consequences of growing up in this environment, especially during early childhood.
Deaths by the Military Police of SP increased 46% in 2024. From January to November 17 of this year, 673 people were killed by military police, compared to 460 in 2023. In 2022, with the expansion of body cameras, SP had the lowest number of deaths committed by police officers on duty.

01/11/2024 – An off-duty military police officer died in the early hours of Friday (01/11) during a robbery attempt on the Marginal do Tietê, in the Barra Funda region, West Zone. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), he was riding a motorcycle with a police friend when they were approached with gunfire by two criminals on another motorcycle.

01/11/2024 – An off-duty military police officer was shot during an attempted robbery in Vila das Mercês, in Sacomã, South Zone, on Friday morning (01/11). According to the Military Police, vehicles in the region were mobilized and carried out searches, managing to locate and approach two suspects.
02/11/2024 – Four suspects tried to rob a building in the early hours of Saturday (02/11), on Maranhão Street, in the Higienópolis neighborhood. During the action, the building’s doorman was assaulted, and the bandits escaped. According to the investigations, the robbers were dressed in social clothes and kippahs, which suggests that they tried to pass themselves off as residents of the region, which has a significant Jewish community.
03/11/2024 – Military Police (PM) and criminals exchange gunfire on Sunday night (03/11), in the middle of Roberto Marinho Avenue, in Brooklin, South Zone. According to the PM, the agents were chasing a black car where six bandits were who had robbed a residence in Morumbi and stolen a driver’s cell phone. Two suspects died and four were arrested.
03/11/2024 – Two criminals approached an app driver and his passengers on Sunday (03/11) on Huet Bacelar Street, in Ipiranga, South Zone. Police analyze images from the car’s camera to identify and detain criminals who fled with only the driver’s cell phone.
04/11/2024 – Off-duty Military Police officer killed a suspect of robbing a supermarket on Av. Cupecê, in the Cidade Ademar neighborhood, South Zone, on Monday (04/11). According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the agent reported that he identified himself when he approached the man. The latter put his hand to his waist as if he were armed. Therefore, the police officer reacted and killed the suspect on the spot.
05/11/2024 – A bus driver was stabbed, on Tuesday (05/11), by a passenger at the Transfer Terminal, on Avenida José Pinheiros Borges, in Itaquera, East Zone. Witnesses said that he and the aggressor would have disagreed before the stabbing happened. Help was called and the victim was taken to a hospital, but he did not survive his injuries. The criminal fled.
05/11/2024 – An action by the Military Police prevented a cargo theft in Vila São Geraldo, in the East Zone, on Tuesday afternoon (05/11). The gang, composed of six members aged 26 to 37, was surprised by the agents while preparing to transship the cargo of clothes and Christmas items to another truck. All were arrested in the act. Two hostages were released by the police without any injuries.
06/11/2024 – A 41-year-old street vendor was beaten with a stone in front of a concert hall Espaço Unimed, on Rua Tagipuru, in Barra Funda, West Zone, on Wednesday night (06/11). According to the victim, who prefers not to be identified, the person responsible for the aggression is Adenilson Lima dos Santos, eldest son of former boxer Maguila.
07/11/2024 – A 32-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were run over by criminals on Sabbado d’Ângelo Street, in Itaquera, East Zone, on Thursday afternoon (07/11). Civil guards witnessed the hit-and-run and soon approached the perpetrators of the crime. One of the criminals was eventually detained, but the other managed to escape.
08/11/2024 – A businessman, a PCC whistleblower to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, was shot dead at São Paulo International Airport, in Guarulhos, in the middle of the afternoon of Friday (08/11). Security cameras recorded the action, which took place on the sidewalk of Terminal 2. The police are investigating the case as execution. He also denounced police corruption. Another three people were seriously injured in the shooting.
09/11/2024 – A man attacked a woman on the sidewalk of Nelson de Oliviera Street, in Sapopemba, East Zone, on Saturday night (09/11). The victim was walking alone when she was approached by the aggressor. A pedestrian intervened and managed to restrain the suspect. The police were called, but the man managed to escape.
11/11/2024 – A 21-year-old man was shot dead on the morning of Monday (11/11), on Clementine Brene Street, in Vila Sônia, South Zone. Then the shooter killed himself. According to the police, the case would be a crime of passion.
12/11/2024 – A 12-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy were seriously injured after the attack by two pit bulls in a playground on Roberto Caetano Maria Lenci Street, in Vila Guilherme, North Zone, on Tuesday (12/11). The person responsible for the dogs has not been located yet.
13/11/2024 – Three men broke into a condominium and tried to steal high-value bicycles, in Lapa, West Zone, on Wednesday night (13/11). Security cameras caught the invasion and the intervention of two police officers. Three disassembled bicycles, valued at R$ 8,000, and two bicycles valued at R$ 16,000 were recovered. The suspects were arrested in the act.
20/11/2024 – A 22-year-old medical student was shot dead at close range, on Wednesday (20/11), during a police approach, on the steps of the Hotel Flor da Vila Mariana, on Cubatão Street, in Vila Mariana, South Zone. In the police report, the police claimed that the young man had tried to take the gun from one of the officers.
20/11/2024 – A man tried to kidnap a 3-year-old child and assaulted his nanny on Avenida Nossa Senhora do Ó, in Limão, North Zone, on Wednesday (20/11). The action was recorded by security cameras of a condominium. The family reported that they did not know the suspect. According to the police report, the nanny said that the man asked questions about her bond with the child. The suspect was arrested on Friday (22/11).
23/11/2024 – A 42-year-old woman was shot and killed in the late Saturday afternoon (23/11) by her ex-husband on Ladeira Porto Geral, in the Historic Center. The victim was rescued and sent to Santa Casa but did not resist. After the shots, the 55-year-old suspect was immobilized by people in the vicinity and subsequently arrested by military police.
24/11/2024 – About 50 Corinthians supporters clashed with the Military Police (PM) on Sunday (24/11) after trying to ambush Vasco supporters outside the Corinthians stadium, in Rua Miguel Inácio Cury, in Itaquera, East Zone. Eight of them were arrested in flagrante delicto by the military police. At least one Corinthians and two PM agents were injured.
25/11/2024 – A 23-year-old man was shot during an attempted robbery on Avenida Jurubatuba, Vila Cordeiro, South Zone of São Paulo, on Monday (25/11). A security camera recorded the moment when the injured victim fell on the sidewalk.
26/11/2024 – A 31-year-old woman died after feeling sick during the hydrolipo aesthetic procedure at the Maná Day aesthetic clinic, on Avenida Conselheiro Carrão, in Vila Carrão, East Zone, on Tuesday (26/11). The case was registered as a suspicious death.
26/11/2024 – A winery in the Elisa Maria community, North Zone, was closed on Tuesday (26/11). The criminals were using the place to launder money from the PCC and sell stolen motorcycles and fake drinks.
27/11/2024 – Model Luciana Curtis, her husband, and 11-year-old daughter were kidnapped by armed criminals and held hostage for 12 hours after having dinner at a restaurant on Rua Pio XI, in Alto da Lapa, West Zone, on Wednesday night (27/11). The bandits also stole the family’s car and emptied their bank accounts. The criminals released the victims on Thursday morning (28/11) in a community in the region of Parada de Taipas, in Brasilândia, North Zone.
28/11/2024 – The Military Police killed a man during an exchange of fire on Thursday morning (28/11) in Jardim Aurora, East Zone. According to the PM, teams were called to attend a motorcycle robbery with two people assaulted. With the arrival of the police, one of the suspects fled. The second started an exchange of fire and tried to flee by stealing a patrol car.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Attention when walking downtown São Paulo, especially in Liberdade and Sé districts. At night, these regions are no-go zones.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate of some locations in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate criminals, who do not hesitate to open fire.
- Avoid, if possible, circulating through the neighborhoods in the East Zone and peripheral neighborhoods in other zones due to the high rates of various crimes.
- Pay attention when trying to meet new people on the internet as criminals use the dating apps and social networks to apply scams.
- Due to several police operations, drug users previously concentrated in a region called “Cracolândia” have spread across downtown, leading to an increase in petty crimes. Hence, avoid walking around with your cell phone in your hand, in addition to wearing jewels and expensive watches.
- The number of express kidnappings has increased lately due to a new method (PIX) that allows people to easily transfer money using bank apps. Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence.
- Attention to the windows when inside a vehicle. Keep them closed, as criminals use heavy traffic to rob passengers that expose valuables.
