01/10/2022 – A 16-year-old boy died after being shot in Paraisopólis, South Zone. He fell off the back of a motorcycle and had to be rescued. At the hospital it was found that he had been shot in the back of the head. Witnesses of the crime claim that the shot came from inside a school and that police officers who were security at the scene would have fired the shots.
02/10/2022 – During the election, two military police officers were shot in front of the Deputado Aurélio Campos State School, on Rua Olímpio de Oliveira Chalegre, in the Cidade Dutra neighborhood, South Zone. According to information from the Military Police, a man shot several times and hit two police officers, a man and a woman. There is no information on the reason for the shooting.

04/10/2022 – A couple was robbed in Jabaquara neighborhood, South Zone. Armed bandits set an ambush, blocked the street and attacked the couple. The man and woman were violently torn from the luxury vehicle, which was stolen. The criminals also took the victims’ cell phones.
05/10/2022 – A woman was victim of the “elbow gang” in downtown São Paulo. The woman was waiting at a traffic light when two men elbowed her car window. The elbow gang breaks car windows using their elbow to steal cell phones and equipment from vehicles.
06/10/2022 – A man was entering the garage of a luxury building in the Brooklyn neighborhood, South Zone, when he was approached by two criminals. The thieves demanded the victim’s motorcycle. Residents of surrounding buildings saw the criminal attack and asked for help.
06/10/2022 – A criminal was shot during an attempted robbery of a family in the south zone. The criminals tried to rob a family in the parking lot of a drugstore, but were surprised by one of the victims, who is a sports shooter and fired at least 10 shots. One of the criminals was rescued in serious condition and the other fled.
08/10/2022 – A man was stabbed to death while trying to defend his father from a criminal in Lauzane Paulista, North Zone.A thief broke into a house that was for sale, neighbors noticed the movement and called the property owners who went to the scene. When they entered the house, the criminal attacked with a knife the owner, an elderly man, the son tried to defend his father and ended up being stabbed.
11/10/2022 –Criminals invaded a mall and surrendered employees of a jewelry store in São Paulo. The criminals acted during a time of high flow of people and still managed to escape without attracting attention.
12/10/2022 – An elderly woman was the target of a scam at a 24-hour ATM in a supermarket in São Paulo. Security cameras show when the elderly woman arrived and was approached by one of the criminals who offered to help with the banking operation. The criminals work in pairs, while one pretends to help the elderly woman and changes her card, the other looks at the password. The police are looking for the criminals.
13/10/2022 – Police officers saved an app driver from being robbed Jardim Bonfiglioli, West Zone. The driver was approached by two armed criminals, when police noticed the action and had a shooting with the robbers.
12/10/2022 – A pharmacy was robbed in Vila Mariana, South Zone. The armed criminal surrendered the cashiers and took all the money that was there. The action lasted just 40 seconds. The police will try to use security camera footage to identify the criminal.
14/10/2022 – A couple was robbed by an armed man in Vila Mariana, South Zone. Surveillance cameras of a property caught the victims walking hand in hand on Rua Doutor Tomás Carvalhal, around 15:17. The criminal was on a parked motorcycle, when the couple passed, he pointed the gun and announced the robbery.
14/10/2022 – A man was kidnapped after setting up a meeting through a dating app in the Butantã region, West Zone. The victim was located and one of those involved in the crime was arrested on the East Zone on Saturday (15/10). According to the Anti-Kidnapping Division delegate, the 38-year-old victim arrived at the meeting point and was taken by the criminals in his own car. After the kidnapping, the victim’s bank noticed bank transactions in high amounts, so the account was blocked. The criminals then contacted the family and demanded a ransom. According to the PM, about R$ 40 thousand were diverted from the victim’s account. The kidnapped man was located on the Marginal Pinheiros, through a joint action by the Civil and Military Police. The others involved in the crime have not been located.
16/10/2022 – A retired military police officer was shot after a robbery on Marginal Tietê, near Ponte da Casa Verde, in Bom Retiro, Central Region. According to the Military Police, he was with his wife on a motorcycle when they were approached by two criminals in another vehicle. The criminals announced the robbery and surrendered the victims, reviewing the officer and his wife. Upon identifying the motorcycle driver as a police officer, the suspects shot the three times. Then they ran away.
18/10/2022 – Three criminals invaded a beauty clinic in the South Zone. They were armed and robbed employees and customers. On the run, they did a mass robbery through the streets until they were arrested by the Military Police.
18/10/2022 – A group was arrested after kidnapping four people and keeping them in two captivity in the region of São Miguel Paulista, East Zone. According to the Military Police (PM), the first two victims were approached during work, in the morning. A biker passed beside the men’s vehicle and warned that of the doors was open. The victims then stopped the car to check, at which point they were surrendered and kidnapped. An anonymous tip led the police to the scene. There, officers were called by two people who reported having been kidnapped victims and released shortly before.
21/10/2022 – A couple was kidnapped and held hostage in their own luxury armored car on Estrada do Sabão, in the Brasilândia region, North Zone. The kidnapping lasted three hours. According to the victims, the criminal was making PIX transfers with the victims’ cell phones. The couple was approached in the car by at least three criminals when they were passing around 6:40 on Avenida das Cerejeiras, Vila Maria. Two of the thieves fled after the vehicle hit a bus and another car while being pursued by police cars.
22/10/2022 – An 81-year-old woman was strangled to death during a robbery at her home, on Rua Aracanga, in Sacomã, South Zone. According to information from the Military Police, the criminals jumped the wall of the residence and entered the house through the window of one of the victims’ bedrooms. The criminals were aggressive and demanded money and jewelry from the family. The old woman started screaming for help and calling the police, when one of the criminals started to strangle her. Her daughter was also attacked.
22/10/2022 – A businessman was released from captivity on the Nova Esperança lane, in Parque Taipas, North Zone after being kidnapped for about 17 hours. To the military police, the victim said that around 23:00 on Saturday (22) he was standing at a traffic light on an avenue when five armed men approached him and ordered him to get into the back seat of their car. Subsequently, the businessman was taken into captivity, where the kidnappers tried to make bank transfers, but since the man did not have an account in Brazil, criminals could not do Pix, thus they were unable to make the transactions.
23/10/2022 – A motorcyclist reacted to an attempted robbery by taking the suspect’s gun and shooting him, on Rua Barão do Tibagi, in Bom Retiro, downtown São Paulo. He was leaving his house when two men on a motorcycle approached and announced the robbery. The duo’s intention was to steal the victim’s motorcycle.
28/10/2022 – A man held his son hostage inside the house where he lives with his family, in Interlagos, South Zone, after having assaulted and stabbed his wife. Gate teams (Special Tactics Action Group) went to the scene to try to negotiate with the criminal. According to information, the couple had argued, at which time the suspect attacked the woman in front of the child. Witnesses called the police. After the woman was rescued, the man, afraid of being taken by the police, held his son hostage.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Stay away from any protest most likely to occur in the city center, including Avenida Paulista, the MASP, Praça do Ciclista, Praça da Sé, Largo da Batata and Praça da Republica.
- Monitor the local media in order to circumvent protest locations, including social media.
- If caught in a demonstration: remain still and take the time to see which way the crowd is going; attempt to leave the area by going against the movement of the crowd; avoid using your mobile phone, taking pictures or filming the demonstration; go to the nearest building as soon as possible and wait until the situation clears; try to avoid contact with security forces if possible.
- Considering the high crime rate in São Paulo, business travelers and expatriates should comply with safety rules in order to reduce the risk linked to violent crime. In case of an assault, it is strictly recommended not to resist the attackers and avoid making any sharp movement that may irritate the assailants, who do not hesitate to open fire.
