With the largest street population in Brazil, the city of São Paulo recorded an increase in the number of people living in this condition in June. A survey by the UFMG Citizenship Observatory (Federal University of Minas Gerais) shows that this number increased from 52.1 thousand in May to just over 53.4 thousand. The database is the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico).

Analysis:
Experts understand that there is, historically, an underreporting of this homeless population of around 33%. They consider positive the federal government’s action in seeking to correct this discrepancy in the data, with the implementation, in February, of the Emergency Strengthening Program of the Single Registry Service in the Single Social Assistance System (Procad/Suas). This encourages municipalities to properly register the homeless population and other vulnerable populations. However, a joint program between the federal government, state governments and municipal governments is needed to take care of this part of the population. All of this work is important to prevent vulnerable populations from resorting to petty crimes.
01/09/2023 – A man was held captive for three hours in Jaraguá, North Zone, after being kidnapped by a gang that uses the “love scam”. One of those involved in the crime was arrested. The victim, a 29-year-old merchant, had made an appointment through a relationship app. When he arrived at the agreed place, he was surprised by the trio still inside his luxury car.
01/09/2023 – A man was arrested for sexual harassment after masturbating inside a bus next to a woman, in the Jardim Paulista neighborhood, West Zone. A young woman saw the 52-year-old man touching himself and alerted a passenger who was sitting next to her, with a message written on her cell phone notepad.
02/09/2023 – Two young women maneuvering a car were robbed by three criminals on two motorcycles in the Campo Limpo neighborhood, South Zone. Security camera footage shows the moment when bandits on two motorcycles approached and robbed two young women, they stole cell phones and jewelry.
04/09/2023 – A criminal was arrested after trying to murder a homeless elderly man in the Ponte Rasa neighborhood, East Zone. Police identified the criminal through security cameras that recorded the crime. The victim was standing on the sidewalk when the criminal approached by car, they argued and the criminal shot and fled. In the criminal’s house, the police found three guns.
05/09/2023 – The Civil Police arrested a woman who worked as a pharmacist and sold expired drugs and other controlled ones, without having the proper special authorization from Anvisa. The arrest took place at the pharmacy where she worked in Jardim Ângela, South Zone. According to agents, several expired supplies and medicines were found.
06/09/2023 – A criminal, disguised as a street vendor, robbed a driver under the Cruzeiro do Sul bridge, on Marginal Tietê, in the Luz neighborhood, downtown São Paulo. Security camera footage shows the moment a street vendor passes by the victim’s vehicle. Then, another man, carrying bags of cookies, throws the products on the ground, pulls out a gun and announces the robbery.
07/09/2023 – A 15-year-old teenager was robbed when she was returning from school with a group of friends in Vila Nivi, North Zone. Security cameras recorded the moment when the group of friends returned home when they were approached by an armed criminal. Some girls managed to escape except the 15-year-old girl.
