The State of São Paulo recorded an increase in the total number of homicides, rapes, robberies and thefts in the last month of August compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) this Monday (26/09). Respectively, these crimes grew 1,3%, 18,2%, 11,9% and 21% compared to the previous year. The biggest increase was noticed in thefts, which reached 50.441 in the last month. The increase in crime rates, which are gradually returning to pre-pandemic levels, is registered even after the efforts of the state government, which since May has increased the number of police on the streets through Operation Sufoco.

24/09/2022 – A merchant was murdered inside his own car. The victim owned a building materials store in the Glicério neighborhood, downtown São Paulo. According to witnesses, the day before the crime, he had argued with a service provider and was allegedly threatened.
26/09/2022 – Two criminals tried to rob a street vigilant in the Ipiranga neighborhood, South Zone. He was at the security cabin when a car pulls up right next to him. One of the criminals gets down and tackles the watchman. Afraid of being kidnapped, he tries to escape, but the thief runs after him and shoots him.
28/09/2022 – A gas station attendant had his motorcycle stolen inside a gas station in Vila Dom Pedro I, South Zone. The employee was working with other employees when he heard the noise of the motorcycle. Upon looking, he saw the bandit taking his motorcycle. The attendant left the motorcycle inside the gas station because he thought it would be a safe place.
Our analysis:
When finding yourself still in an exposed space like in a street, it is important to remain attentive to the movement around you. Even if you feel relaxed, remaining aware of your surroundings is of great importance for your protection. It is possible sometimes to anticipate risky situations, such as a robbery that is occurring on the same street where you are. Thus, it may be possible to escape before the criminals think of coming for you.
28/09/2022 – A woman was kidnapped in front of a supermarket in the Jaraguá neighborhood, North Zone. The pair of criminals wanted the woman to transfer R$10,000 via PIX, as she was unable to do so, they forced the woman to ask relatives for the amount. They released the victim after 4 hours.
29/09/2022 – Three bandits were arrested after taking children and teachers hostage inside an English school in the Morumbi neighborhood, south of the capital. Before, they had robbed a mansion in the same neighborhood where they assaulted and threatened five family members. It took almost two hours of negotiations. The criminals were even armed with rifles and shot at the military police.
29/09/2022 – A criminal tried to rob a military police (PM) officer on a staircase near Avenida 9 de Julho, in downtown São Paulo. The PM reacted and shot the criminal who died instantly.
29/09/2022 – Two criminals broke into and robbed a jewelry store in the Brooklyn neighborhood, South Zone. The bandits also stole cell phones and rings from customers and employees. The crime happened at 15:40 and was recorded by the store’s security cameras.
30/09/2022 – A military police officer reacted to a robbery, fought with the criminals and ended up shot. The PM was getting out of the car when he was approached by two criminals, he reacted, fought with the criminals and during the fight was shot in the abdomen.
Our analysis:
Reacting to a robbery is very risky. Usually, the person carrying a gun has a big advantage over the unarmed victim. Besides, a simple escape attempt can have a fatal outcome, since the offender is also in a stressful situation, and may take unthinking and disproportionate measures. It is therefore important to remain as calm as possible. The most precious asset to protect in such cases is human life, so the best thing to do is to let the perpetrators take the assets so that the physical integrity of the victims is guaranteed.
