On August 2nd, Instituto Sou da Paz released a survey that shows that out of every ten homicides, in only four a suspect is identified and brought to justice in Brazil.
How Was It Done?
The study compiled data on intentional homicides, when there is intent to kill, recorded in 2019. The institute uses a methodology that considers “solved” a murder that resulted in criminal proceedings by the end of the following year, that is, when the investigation identified a suspect who was brought to justice. Of the 39,000 murders in 2019, only 37% were reported.
The survey used data from 18 states and the Federal District. Eight states did not submit enough information. Rondônia and Mato Grosso do Sul (86%) were the ones that most managed to point out culprits. Amapá (19%) and Rio de Janeiro (16%) are the ones that have the smallest number of suspects reported. São Paulo reached a case solution rate of 34%.
