On Tuesday (02/08), the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) signed an agreement with the Electoral Observation Mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (Uniore) for the body to monitor the elections in October this year. The agreement was signed by the president of the court, Minister Luiz Edson Fachin, and by the vice president, Alexandre de Moraes, who will command the TSE during the elections.
Organizations to Monitor the Elections
Uniore is the third international organization to sign this type of agreement with the TSE. Other institutions that have also partnered with the court are:
- Organization of American States (OAS), which has already sent observers to the 2018 and 2020 elections
- Mercosur Parliament (Parlasul), body that represents the interests of the nations that make up the bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay)
Why the Initiative?
The signing of these agreements with international organizations comes after criticisms by President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters about the electronic voting machines and the electoral process. For experts, this would be a way to guarantee the validity and respect of the election results by all candidates.
