The Attack
According to police reports, the suspect jumped over a wall approximately two meters high to gain access to the school premises at around 13h27. He immediately attempted to enter one of the classrooms but was stopped by a teacher who physically held the door shut, preventing him from reaching the students inside. At 13h28, another teacher, recognizing the threat, activated the school’s panic button, triggering an emergency response. School staff acted quickly and managed to restrain the suspect before he could access other areas. The Military Police arrived at the scene within four minutes. During the confrontation, after failing to advance further into the school, the man allegedly used the machete to inflict a serious injury on his own leg. He was then taken under police custody to an emergency medical unit for treatment.
Former Student
According to the Military Police, the suspect is a former student of the institution, and investigators are still working to determine the motivation behind the attack. Officers involved in the case reported that the young man stated he intended to injure as many children as possible, raising concerns about the severity of the threat. Surveillance footage shows him arriving at the school dressed in black clothing and wearing combat boots, carrying a yellow bag. After entering the premises, he removed the machete from the bag and discarded it along the way. Additional images captured in the school courtyard show the moment he was restrained by an adult, while students and staff rushed to escape the area in a state of panic. The case is being investigated to clarify his intentions and possible premeditation.
Another Case
In 2019, Suzano was the scene of another major school attack that had a profound impact on the city and the country. On March 13 of that year, two former students invaded the Professor Raul Brasil State School during recess and opened fire on students and staff. Seven people were killed inside the school—five students and two staff members—and 11 others were injured. Before entering the school, the attackers had also shot the owner of a nearby rental shop, who later died. After carrying out the attack, one of the perpetrators killed his accomplice and then took his own life. The episode remains one of the most serious school attacks in Brazil and continues to influence discussions on school security and violence prevention.
Analysis:
The attack in Suzano reveals the ongoing vulnerability of school environments to targeted acts of violence, particularly when perpetrators have prior connections to the institution. The fact that the assailant was a former student reinforces a recurring pattern observed in similar cases, in which familiarity with the physical layout and routines reduces barriers to entry and increases the potential for harm. Despite the severity of the threat, the rapid reaction of school staff—especially the teacher who blocked access to the classroom, was decisive in preventing a potentially far more tragic outcome, demonstrating the importance of preparedness and immediate response protocols in educational settings.
The activation of a panic button and the swift arrival of the Military Police indicate that emergency response systems can be effective in containing situations once they are underway. However, the ease with which the attacker accessed the premises by jumping a wall point to structural weaknesses in perimeter security that remain common in many public schools.
