RIO DE JANEIRO SECURITY INCIDENTS – 3RD BULLETIN OF AUGUST

While overall violent crime decreased statewide across Rio de Janeiro in early 2026, violent deaths spiked significantly in localized turf wars driven by the Comando Vermelho (CV) against rival factions and paramilitaries. Armed groups launching attacks from strongholds in Cidade de Deus and Gardênia Azul drove a 62% surge in violent deaths in the Taquara precinct area, aiming to capture illegal extortion revenue from milícia-controlled neighborhoods like Rio das Pedras. Similar territorial disputes caused violent deaths to more than double in Niterói’s Fonseca precinct area, highlighting intense localized warfare despite broader safety improvements.
