Known for its vibrant nightlife and reputation as a bohemian hub in the West Zone of São Paulo, the neighborhood of Pinheiros continues to lead the ranking of cell phone thefts and robberies in the capital during the first two months of the year. According to a survey conducted by TV Globo based on data from the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the area recorded the highest number of incidents among all neighborhoods in the city. The figures reinforce concerns about public safety in one of São Paulo’s busiest and most frequented districts, which attracts a large flow of residents, workers, and visitors, especially during evenings and weekends.

Between January and February, at least 2,303 cell phones were stolen or robbed in Pinheiros, which corresponds to an average of approximately 39 incidents per day. The data indicates a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when the neighborhood recorded 1,562 cases. This represents a rise of more than 47% in just one year, according to the survey. Pinheiros had already ranked first in early 2025, and the persistence of its position highlights the concentration of this type of crime in areas with intense pedestrian movement, commercial activity, and nightlife.
Other Neighborhoods
In addition to Pinheiros, several other neighborhoods in São Paulo have also experienced high levels of cell phone theft and robbery, reflecting a broader pattern of urban crime in central and high-traffic areas. According to the ranking compiled from SSP data, the five neighborhoods with the highest number of cases are:
- Pinheiros: 2,303 cases
- Perdizes: 1,880 cases
- Sé: 1,846 cases
- Consolação: 1,781 cases
- Campos Elíseos: 1,656 cases
Police Station Registers Decrease
When contacted, the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) stated that the police station responsible for the Pinheiros area recorded a 3.49% decrease in robbery cases during the same period. The agency emphasized that ongoing efforts have been made to combat these crimes, including intensified policing and investigative actions. According to the SSP, since 2023, more than 50,000 arrests have been carried out across the capital in operations targeting robbery and theft. Authorities argue that, despite localized increases in certain neighborhoods, broader enforcement strategies continue to produce results in reducing crime in other areas of the city.

The concentration of cell phone thefts and robberies in Pinheiros reflects a broader pattern in urban crime, where high-density, high-mobility areas become prime targets for opportunistic offenses. Neighborhoods with intense nightlife, strong commercial activity, and large pedestrian flows tend to create ideal conditions for this type of crime, as offenders can easily identify distracted victims and quickly blend into the environment after the act.
The distribution of cases across other central districts such as Perdizes, Sé, Consolação, and Campos Elíseos reinforces the idea that this is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather part of a structural pattern affecting strategic urban zones. These areas combine transport hubs, nightlife venues, and economic activity, which increases both the supply of potential targets and the anonymity of offenders. In this context, theft and robbery of mobile devices are particularly attractive operational crimes due to their low complexity and high potential for financial return, especially when combined with subsequent digital fraud involving banking applications.
