Head Trauma
The victims were rescued by firefighters and taken to the city’s Santa Casa. One of the teenagers, aged 17, was hit in the head and hospitalized with suspected head trauma — she would undergo surgery. The other, 15 years old, had injuries to one of her feet and has already been discharged.
The Attack
The attacker entered the teaching unit with the hammer in his backpack. After starting the attack, he was restrained by teachers, and the Military Police were called.
The teenager told the police that he only did not attack other people because he was prevented from doing so. A knife, a machete, a lighter and a spray were found in the attacker’s backpack.
Trend
A survey carried out by the Sou da Paz Institute pointed out that the first six months of 2023 had already recorded the highest number of attacks in Brazilian schools at least since 2002. Since then, 25 have been registered, 7 of which this year alone. The previous record was achieved last year, with six cases. Before that, in 2019, there were three attacks inside educational institutions. The cases seem to be intensifying each year.
