The number of robberies and thefts recorded in the state of São Paulo fell by 22.5% and 5.9%, respectively, in October of this year, according to data released on Friday, November 28, by the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP). There were also reductions in reports of rape (14.6%), robberies resulting in death (38.5%), and intentional homicides (6.3%). In this last category, the decline was even more pronounced in the city of São Paulo, reaching 30%. On the other hand, the capital saw a slightly smaller drop in robberies (19.83%) and a very modest decrease in thefts (0.33%), which continue to trend upward in the year-to-date numbers.

City Center
In a statement, the SSP reported that the reduction in robberies registered in October in the capital was the most significant of the year. The agency also noted that incidents in the central region fell by 48% and linked the improvement to the dispersal of Cracolândia. According to the department, the end of the flow of drug users who for decades concentrated between Rua dos Protestantes and Rua General Couto de Magalhães contributed to the sharp decline in robberies in the area.
Recent Cases of Violence
Despite the improved indicators, recent episodes of violence have drawn attention in the city. On November 1st, 20-year-old Beatriz Sorrilha Munhos died after being shot in the head during a robbery in Sapopemba, in the eastern zone. She had accompanied her father and boyfriend to meet the buyer of a drone they had sold. At least one suspect has been arrested. Days earlier, on October 22nd, thieves held a 45-year-old nanny at gunpoint with a baby in her arms while they raided a home in the Jardins neighborhood, in the western zone.

Analysis:
The latest crime statistics from São Paulo reveal a consistent downward trend across key violent and property crime categories, indicating that recent security policies and policing strategies are yielding results at the state level. The sharp declines in robberies (22.5%), rapes (14.6%), and homicides (6.3%) suggest improved operational efficiency, better intelligence integration, and stronger territorial presence by law enforcement. The particularly steep drop in robberies resulting in death—down 38.5%—is a meaningful indicator of reduced lethality in criminal encounters, a metric often overlooked but crucial for evaluating public safety conditions.
In the capital, however, the picture is more nuanced. While intentional homicides fell by an impressive 30%, property crimes such as thefts continue to show resistance to decline, dropping only 0.3% in October and remaining elevated in year-to-date comparisons. This divergence reflects structural challenges inherent to large urban centers: high population density, intense commercial activity, and the mobility of offenders all contribute to theft dynamics that are less responsive to short-term enforcement.
