05/05/2023 – A warehouse belonging to the Rede Market supermarket, located at the entrance to the Parque Belém district, was the target of an arson attack. The flames took on large proportions and hit three trucks, which were destroyed. According to the Military Police, two security guards who were on duty said they were surrendered by armed bandits and had their cell phones stolen. The staff also reported that the criminals wanted to enter the warehouse, but since they did not have the key, they set fire to plastic and cardboard boxes outside the warehouse and fled.
08/05/2023 – A 39-year-old man was arrested for being the manager of drug trafficking in the Lambicada and Parque Mambucaba neighborhoods. He was found in a location known as “predinhos do Belém”, after information about his whereabouts was passed to the DisqueDenúncia. The man was on the run for drug trafficking and qualified homicide. When the officers arrived at the place where he was hiding, the criminal tried to flee, but was arrested.
09/05/2023 – The Military Police (PM) carried out an operation against organized crime in downtown Angra dos Reis. The action took place in the hills of Glória 1, Glória 2, Peres and Carmo. According to the PM, the objective of the operation is to arrest criminals, as well as to seize drugs, weapons, and other materials. With the support of the Municipal Guard, the police also seeks to remove robbed and stolen vehicles from circulation.
14/05/2023 – A Military Police (PM) blitz in support of Operation Prohibition, held in Praia do Anil, arrested a man and with him drugs and a gun. He would have tried to flee the blitz when he was approached. According to the PM, when the vehicle tried to pass through the blitz, the driver accelerated the car and tried to flee, when he was surrounded by the police. The driver was arrested, and a pistol and 1 kg of marijuana were seized inside the vehicle.
16/05/2023 – A shooting between military police and criminals involved in drug trafficking in Morro da Glória 1 ended with one man dead and one injured. According to the Military Police, officers were making a routine round when they saw seven armed criminals selling drugs. As they approached the scene, they were met with gunfire and fought back. Two pistols, two radio communicators and drugs were seized.
23/05/2023 – A shooting between criminals involved in drug trafficking and military police ended with a woman dead and two men shot in Morro de Santo Antônio. According to the Military Police, officers were on patrol at the address when they were shot at and fought back. Two revolvers, a fake pistol, two cell phones, two radio transmitters, a camouflage suit, cocaine, marijuana, ammunition, and a sum of cash were seized.
27/05/2023 – A businessman was shot after reacting to a robbery on Ilha Grande. The crime took place in a vacation rental house in Praia da Longa. According to the Civil Police, three armed criminals invaded the property and surrendered guests – about 15 people, including adults and children. They trapped the victims in a room and demanded cell phones, money, and jewelry. During the threats, some of the hostages reacted and got into a physical fight with one of the bandits. At this time, the thief shot one of the guests, he was hit by eight shots in the back. The criminals fled with the victims’ belongings.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Shootouts remain the main risk facing personnel in Angra dos Reis. Several security operations related to drug trafficking were also registered this month.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move until the gunfire has clearly ended.
- Attention to the sounds of shots when driving through BR-101, which has on its margins many gang-controlled zones.
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of ‘communities’, particularly: Downtown, Parque Belém, Sapinhatuba I, Sapinhatuba II, Sapinhatuba III, Areal, Parque Mambucaba and Morro da Glória I e II.
- Avoid stopping on BR-101 roadside, due to cases of robberies, especially in the most isolated areas.
- Be careful when walking downtown as there is a risk of petty crimes.
- After nightfall, avoid circulating on the BR-101, due to the increased risk of robbery and assault.
