The Federal government published a decree extending the deadline for re-registering weapons. The deadline, which would expire on Monday (03/04), was postponed by 30 days, to May 3. The registration program was announced by the Lula government in February. The objective is to establish control over the arsenal circulating in the country. The change in the deadline for re-registration responds to a request from parliamentarians linked to the public security sector.

More Guns
The number of guns in circulation in Brazil has grown in recent years due to the policy of encouraging and facilitating purchases adopted during the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Decree
According to the decree, “permitted and restricted-use firearms acquired from the issue of Decree No. 9,785, of May 7, 2019, will be registered in the National Weapons System”, even those that are already registered on other systems.
Re-registration
On Tuesday (28/03), Minister Flávio Dino stated that the number of guns registered with the Federal Police (PF) exceeded the record kept by the Army. According to the PF, more than 824,000 weapons have been registered since February, when the Lula government opened the deadline for registration. Meanwhile, the Army’s system has 772,000 firearms registered. Of the total number of weapons registered by the Federal Police, 782,300 are permitted and 41,700 are of restricted caliber.
New gun policy
Chamber of Deputies president, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), is negotiating an agreement between the government and public security parliamentarians to end the impasse involving weapons policy in Brazil. According to the ongoing negotiations, the rules would return to the 2018 level – before the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government made them more flexible. If the Planalto accepts, the Chamber of Deputies president would undertake not to guide legislative decrees that would make void the text edited by President Lula (PT) on January 1st.
