Between January and April 2025, the state of Rio de Janeiro recorded 37 security agents murdered — a 106% increase compared to the same period in 2024, while deaths caused by police interventions rose 34.4%, from 212 to 285, according to data from Brazil’s Ministry of Justice. These trends contrast with national figures, which remained largely stable or declined slightly.

06/06/2025 – On Friday night (06/06), a civil police officer was shot during an attempted robbery in front of a motel on Rua do Senado, in Lapa. Surveillance footage shows the officer talking to a staff member when a man on a motorcycle approached, drew a gun and exchanged fire with the officer. The suspect fled on foot, leaving the motorcycle behind. The suspect was later found wounded.
06/06/2025 – Four suspects were arrested on Friday (06/06) in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo for their involvement in the brutal assault of a 25-year-old law student in Lagoa, South Zone, on 23 May. The victim was beaten unconscious with 22 kicks to the head following a nightclub dispute. Two suspects, including Jacobo Pareja Rodriguez, remain at large. Among those detained is model Bruno Krupp, who allegedly incited the attack. Jacobo Pareja Rodriguez wanted for attempted murder, is the son of Colombian drug trafficker Alexander Pareja Garcia, a former leader of the Norte del Valle Cartel.
06/06/2025 – On Friday (06/06), a man was caught on security cameras brutally assaulting his ex-wife in the hallway of her building in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone. He was arrested days later in Rio das Ostras, in the Região dos Lagos. Despite being under a restraining order, he continued to harass and threaten the victim. He also has two prior criminal records for threats, insults, and harassment involving former partners.
07/06/2025 – On Saturday (07/06), First Sergeant Otávio de Almeida Justa, a longtime member of the BOPE (Rio’s elite police unit), was fatally shot during a traffic dispute on Estrada da Cancela Preta, in Bangu, West Zone. Off-duty at the time, he was hit in the abdomen and died. The shooter fled and remains unidentified. The Capital Homicide Division is investigating.
08/06/2025 – In the early hours of Sunday (08/06), a police raid in Morro Santo Amaro, Catete, South Zone, resulted in a shootout during a party that left six civilians injured and one dead. The operation was conducted by Bope and COE following reports of armed suspects. On Monday (09/06), Military Police Secretary Marcelo de Menezes Nogueira admitted that key planning protocols, such as risk assessment, timing, and community safety, were not followed.
08/06/2025 – On Sunday (08/06), a street vendor was arrested on Copacabana Beach, South Zone, for scamming a tourist couple from the Dominican Republic. He charged them R$ 1,000 for two corn cobs, well above the local average of R$ 10–20 per unit. Initially asking for R$ 300, the vendor lowered the price to R$ 60 after the couple protested, then used a different card machine to overcharge. The couple noticed the excessive charge via their bank app and reported it.
08/06/2025 – On Sunday night (08/06), residents of the Fubá and Campinho hills in Cascadura, North Zone, endured intense shootouts amid an ongoing war between rival drug factions. Videos circulating online show members of the Red Command (CV) mocking the Third Pure Command (TCP) after reportedly advancing into Morro do Fubá, a territory traditionally controlled by the TCP. Armed confrontations were reported near the Pedra Rachada area. No injuries have been confirmed so far.
09/06/2025 – On Monday (09/06), police uncovered a stolen phone trafficking point just meters from the 20th Police Precinct in Vila Isabel, North Zone, after GPS signals from at least four stolen devices pointed to the area. The location, next to a tire shop, was found to contain dozens of stolen phones and two pistol magazines. A suspect was arrested at the scene.
09/06/2025 – On Monday (09/06), a snack bar in Copacabana, South Zone, was shut down after a 17-year-old girl reported finding a live cockroach inside a pastel she consumed at the establishment. Accompanied by her mother, she sought medical attention and then filed a complaint at the 12th Police District. Officers inspected the site, documented the contaminated food, and arrested the supplier on the spot for crimes against consumer relations. The store was closed following a forensic inspection.
09/06/2025 – On Monday morning (09/06), a delivery worker was shot by a patrol officer from the Segurança Presente program on Avenida Maracanã, in Tijuca, North Zone. Police and the victim’s family provided conflicting accounts: the officer claimed the cyclist tried to attack him during an approach, prompting him to fire a shot to the waist. The family said the officer nearly hit the victim on the sidewalk, then acted aggressively; the delivery worker allegedly slapped him in self-defense before being shot.
09/06/2025 – On Monday (09/06), a man involved in the ongoing gang conflict in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone was shot and killed in Morro do Fubá, in Cascadura. Identified as a member of a criminal group from Morro do Dezoito, he was reportedly leading assaults on rival territories in the Fubá and Campinho hills. According to police, he was shot by members of the Third Pure Command (TCP).
10/06/2025 – On Tuesday night (10/06), a retired military police officer shot and killed two suspects during an attempted robbery in Marechal Hermes, North Zone. According to authorities, the officer reacted when two men attempted to rob a commercial establishment. Both suspects were fatally shot at the scene, and a 9mm pistol was seized. During the gunfight, the officer and a woman present at the location were also injured. The Capital Homicide Division is investigating the case.
10/06/2025 – On Tuesday (10/06), a major operation by the Civil Police against the Third Pure Command (TCP) in the Complexo de Israel, North Zone, paralyzed parts of the city. Avenida Brasil, Linha Amarela, and Linha Vermelha were shut down, severely disrupting bus, train, and BRT services. Four civilians were injured, including two bus passengers and more than 20 suspects were arrested. Police officers seized eight rifles, grenades, Molotov cocktails, and military equipment. The operation aimed to dismantle a criminal organization led by “Peixão,” which had operated in several favelas in the city’s northern zone.
10/06/2025 – An attempted robbery took place on Tuesday evening (10/06) on Rua Capitão Resende, near Rua Aristides Caire, in Cachambi, North Zone, when a motorcyclist approached a car stopped in traffic. The driver immediately reacted by accelerating toward the assailant, driving onto the sidewalk, and crashing through the gate of a residential building. The suspect managed to dodge the impact and fled on a motorcycle that was waiting further ahead.
11/05/2025 – On Wednesday (11/06), a man was arrested by the Federal Police in a luxury apartment in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone, for his role in an international drug trafficking scheme between Brazil and Europe. The investigation began after 300 kg of cocaine and boric acid were found hidden in a shipment of sea salt bound for Antwerp, Belgium, in July 2024. The suspect is believed to have coordinated the smuggling operation, using shell companies to launder money and organize the logistics.
12/06/2025 – The Bonde dos Crias, an armed group linked to the Red Command (CV), was targeted on Thursday (12/06), by a Civil Police operation in Vila Kennedy, West Zone. The action followed escalating conflicts with militiamen from the neighboring Catiri area, marked by summary executions and an imposed curfew on residents. Members of the group are accused of drug trafficking, homicides, extortion, use of stolen vehicles, and crimes against law enforcement. The operation aimed to dismantle their logistical and financial structure, with a potential seizure of 6 billion reais.
