12/08/2026 – On Wednesday (12), Cláudio Rafael Landeiro Moreira, a 37-year-old man living with psychological disorders, died from internal bleeding and severe head trauma after being mistaken for a bicycle thief in Copacabana. Security cameras captured a brutal six-minute assault in which a local security guard, alongside delivery workers and a bystander, inflicted 57 blows with a wooden club, accompanied by kicks, punches, and stomps to the head as the victim lay helpless. Following the investigation and public outrage over the surveillance footage, two primary suspects were taken into custody under temporary arrest warrants, facing charges of triple-qualified homicide as police work to identify the remaining assailants.
14/08/2026 – Members of the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) drug faction targeted property managers and residents with extortion tactics in Pavuna and Costa Barros, North Zone, prompting a Civil Police operation on Friday (14). Operating from the Complexo da Pedreira and Morro da Quitanda, the criminals threatened condominium boards, warning they would allow drug users onto properties or break down boundary walls, to force managers into replacing legitimate security providers with a company tied to the gang. Civil Police executed three search and seizure warrants during the raid, though no immediate arrests were recorded.
14/08/2026 – A serial fraudster with 28 criminal records was arrested in flagrante on Friday (14), while driving along Avenida Brasil in Manguinhos, North Rio. Investigators from Detran-RJ and the 23rd Police District (Méier) intercepted the suspect, identified as Fábio Borges de Oliveira, who routinely impersonated police officers and Detran agents to carry out romance scams and vehicle fraud schemes. Inside his car, officers recovered an illegal revolver with an erased serial number, tactical gear, forged driver’s licenses, and deposit receipts totaling R$ 23,500.
16/08/2026 – A woman suffered severe back burns after her partner poured ethanol over her and set her on fire during an argument on Sunday (16), in the Pavuna neighborhood. Alerted by the victim’s father, investigators from the 39th Police District conducted a search in the area, leading to the suspect’s location and arrest in flagrante delicto for attempted femicide.
17/08/2026 – The Federal Police launched “Operação Malebolge” on Monday (17), targeting a criminal network accused of fraudulently issuing individual taxpayer registries (CPFs) across Rio de Janeiro and Nova Iguaçu. Federal agents deployed armored vehicles to execute eight search and seizure warrants in neighborhoods including Cidade de Deus and Jacarepaguá. The investigation revealed that members of the scheme presented forged civil documents and bribed clerks at accredited processing centers to register fraudulent CPFs through the Federal Revenue Service.

17/08/2026 – Violent deaths in the state of Rio de Janeiro surged by 25% in July 2026 compared to the same month last year, rising from 240 to 301 victims according to official Instituto de Segurança Pública (ISP) data released on Monday (17). This sharp monthly increase was predominantly driven by a 27% rise in homicides and a 45% jump in police confrontation fatalities, even as year-to-date violent deaths through July showed an overall 6% decline. A third of all July fatalities were concentrated in just five policing areas, led by the 18th Military Police Battalion in Jacarepaguá (25 deaths) amid ongoing territorial wars between the Comando Vermelho and local militias.
18/08/2026 – A high-ranking cartel leader responsible for coordinating armed territorial expansions was killed in a shootout with police in Gardênia Azul, West Zone, on Tuesday (18). The key boss of the Comando Vermelho (CV) operating out of Gardênia Azul and Cidade de Deus opened fire on Civil Police agents during a targeted raid before being fatally wounded. Officers seized a handgun at the scene and arrested an additional gang member with an outstanding warrant for robbery.
19/08/2026 – A delivery truck carrying R$ 25,000 worth of online merchandise was hijacked by armed criminals backed by two escort motorcycles on Avenida Presidente Vargas in Downtown Rio on the afternoon of Wednesday (19). Alerted by the driver and his assistant, Municipal Force agents pursued the vehicle onto the Viaduto dos Marinheiros, where one of the hijackers jumped from the moving truck to flee on a motorcycle with his accomplices, causing the unguided vehicle to crash into a guardrail. The stolen cargo and truck were fully recovered at the scene by law enforcement, though no arrests were made during the intervention.
19/08/2026 – Five public buses were hijacked and used as street barricades on Estrada Marechal Miguel Salazar Mendes de Moraes in Cidade de Deus during a Military Police operation on the morning of Wednesday (19). Armed faction members ordered the vehicles to obstruct law enforcement as the 18th Military Police Battalion targeted the Comando Vermelho (CV) to stop rival territorial expansions, resulting in widespread transit disruptions and school closures. 21/08/2026 – On Friday (21), a high-intensity Military Police operation against armed criminal groups in the Complexo de Israel triggered intense gunfire as suspects deployed barricades rigged with explosives and booby-trapped vehicles, which specialized teams safely neutralized without injury. Midst the shooting, a bus driver on his way to work was hit in the shoulder in Parada de Lucas and rushed to the hospital in stable condition. The severe security situation forced the temporary closure of major thoroughfares like Avenida Brasil, disrupted public transit, and led to the suspension of classes across 16 local schools. Security forces, supported by five armored vehicles and aerial units, ultimately cleared the booby traps and restored traffic flow, though no immediate arrests were reported.
