23/05/2025 – On Friday (23/05), police arrested Jean Felipe da Silva Mendes de Morais, 21, at Carlos Chagas Hospital, in Marechal Hermes, North Zone, after he was injured in a confrontation. Identified as a key member of a violent car theft gang, Jean had a warrant for his arrest and was linked to multiple armed robberies under investigation.

23/05/2025 – On Friday evening (23/05), two men were shot on Rua Alberto Cavalcanti, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone. One of the victims, aged between 25 and 29, died at the scene, while the other, a 41-year-old man, was taken to the hospital but did not survive. One was in a Mitsubishi vehicle and the other on the sidewalk; it’s unclear if they were together. The Capital Homicide Division (DHC) has launched an investigation.
23/05/2025 – A violent armed conflict erupted on Friday (23/05), and lasted through Sunday (25/05), in Morro dos Macacos, Vila Isabel, North Zone, amid a turf war between rival drug factions Red Command (CV) and Third Capital Command (TCP). The weekend-long shootout resulted in at least one confirmed death, reported on Saturday in the Pau da Bandeira area. Military police intensified operations, and BOPE teams were deployed to contain the violence. On Sunday morning, residents alerted authorities to two grenades allegedly placed on a staircase in the Chelsea sector.
25/05/2025 – On Sunday (25/05), four people were injured after being deliberately run over in front of the Sonho Lindo bar in Laranjeiras, South Zone. The driver reportedly rammed into birthday party guests following a verbal altercation. Witnesses said he left the scene after the dispute and returned minutes later in his car to carry out the attack. The suspect attempted to flee but was arrested shortly after by military police.
25/05/2025 – On Sunday (25/05), police officers from the 23rd BPM responded to an apartment in Ipanema, South Zone, after a call reporting domestic violence. They found the wife of federal magistrate Alcides Martins Ribeiro Filho with visible marks on her neck and arm. The judge attempted to block the intervention and acted aggressively. He is under investigation for domestic violence.
26/05/2025 – On Monday (26/05), in Leblon, South Zone, psychiatrist Mara Faget was accused of defrauding at least eight patients while continuing to practice despite having her medical license revoked in 2021. According to investigations, she requested large sums of money from vulnerable patients under the guise of family emergencies and never repaid them. One nurse, for example, claimed to have lent her R$92,000. In another case, Faget allegedly manipulated a family into handing over R$800,000, based on a false inheritance story. She also misdiagnosed an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s.
26/05/2025 – On Monday (26/05), two men were arrested during a police operation in Morro do Turano, in Rio Comprido, North Zone, for their suspected involvement in separate criminal acts committed in February in the city’s South Zone. One is accused of participating in an attempted robbery against a police commissioner in Gávea, while the other allegedly acted as a lookout for a group linked to the Red Command that targets luxury homes.
26/05/2025 – On Monday night (26/05), an app driver was shot in the head during an attempted robbery on Rua Júlio de Melo, in Senador Camará, West Zone. The victim, who was with two passengers at the time, was initially taken to the hospital but died after allegedly waiting unattended for hours.
27/05/2025 – On Tuesday morning (27/05), a man was arrested after attempting to set fire to a floating restaurant in Urca, South Zone. A staff member noticed the fire in time and managed to prevent it from spreading. The suspect tried to escape by jumping into the sea but was arrested by military police officers. The motive behind the arson attempt is still under investigation.
28/05/2025 – On Wednesday (28/05), the Civil Police launched an operation in Itaguaí, West Zone, targeting a militia group that had been extorting money from local merchants. The investigation began in February 2022, when two suspects were arrested, one with R$ 420 hidden in his underwear. The group charged illegal fees and threatened merchants using assault rifles to enforce payments. In December 2024, they expelled a merchant and stole his goods, equipment, and delivery vehicles. Three people were arrested during the operation.
29/05/2025 – Brazilian funk artist MC Poze do Rodo was arrested early Thursday (29/05) in his house, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, West Zone, by the Civil Police’s anti-narcotics division (DRE) on charges of glorifying crime and involvement with drug trafficking. According to investigators, the artist performs exclusively in Red Command-controlled areas, where heavily armed traffickers ensure event security. Authorities also allege that his lyrics promote drug use and armed conflict. The investigation also links the artist’s shows to the faction’s financial operations.
29/05/2025 – On Thursday (29/05), a taxi driver in Rio de Janeiro was taken to the police station after allegedly charging a Chilean tourist an abusive fare of US$150 (around R$848) for a ride from Galeão Airport to Barra da Tijuca. According to city officials, even under the highest fare rate, the trip should cost about R$120. The driver was accompanied by an unauthorized person, and both were taken to the Tourist Police. The vehicle was impounded, and the auxiliary driver’s license to operate was immediately revoked.
30/05/2025 – In the early hours of Friday (30/05), a “rolezinho” (a mass motorcycle ride) disrupted neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. Hundreds of motorcycles took part in what is believed to be a protest organized by funk artist Oruam following the arrest of MC Poze do Rodo, who is under investigation for promoting crime and suspected ties to drug trafficking. Oruam had posted online expressing his intention to stage the “biggest bike rally in Rio’s history” to demand Poze’s release. During the event, police seized six irregular motorcycles and detained one man at the 3rd BPM (Méier).
