30/07/2023 – 33-year-old Nathallia Cristiny Candido Lacerda was shot in the back by a military police patrol, in Pavuna neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio, on Sunday night (30/08). The police alleged that the driver of the car in which she was being transported did not obey a police order to stop at a police check point. However, her husband, the driver, alleges that he did not disobey a stop order given by agents and that there was no check point.

30/07/2023 – A military policewoman was shot on Sunday night (30/07) after reacting to a robbery in the neighborhood of Guadalupe, in the North Zone of Rio. According to the Military Police, Priscila Santos Martins was off duty when she was approached by criminals. She was hit in the leg and, according to the corporation, her health framework is stable.
02/08/2023 – Ten people died, and five others were injured, including two military police officers, during an operation in Complexo da Penha, in the North Zone of Rio, on Wednesday (02/08). According to reports from residents, since early morning there has been intense shooting in the region. Fire was set on barricades to disrupt the movement of agents. Buses were unable to pass through roads in the region. The action involving civil and military police began at 5:30 am and ended around 3:00 pm.
06/08/2023 – On Sunday (06/08), a Military Police patrol shot at a vehicle, killing 26-year-old Guilherme Lucas Martins Matias, and injuring two others, early in the morning, in Catete, in the South Zone of Rio. The car in which the young man was with three friends was hit by at least seven shots. Only the driver of the vehicle was unharmed. Guilherme Lucas was returning from a funk party in a nearby community with friends at the time of the approach. According to the Civil Police report, a PM gave the order to stop the vehicle, which was traveling on the wrong side of the street on the corner of Rua Fialho and Rua Santa Catarina, but the driver would not have obeyed. The officer claimed that, upon realizing that the man in the passenger seat was armed with a silver pistol pointed in his direction, he fired shots at the occupants of the car.
06/08/2023 – A 13-year-old teenager was shot dead during a Military Police operation in Cidade de Deus, West Zone. According to residents, the police would have entered the community shooting and, would have altered the crime scene. According to the police officers involved in the incident, teams were carrying out policing when two men on a motorcycle shot at them. After confrontation, a teenager was found hit.
07/08/2023 – A 60-year-old woman was shot at home in Anil, Jacarepaguá, West Zone. She was in her apartment room, which is on the 9th floor, when a shot went through the window and hit her leg.
07/08/2023 – Former councilor Zico Bacana and his brother were killed in a shooting in Guadalupe, Zona Norte. According to witnesses, a car drove by with armed men shooting at the bakery where they were on Rua Eneas Martins. In addition to Zico Bacana and his brother, the police confirmed that a third person was killed, he was passing by and ended up being shot. Zico Bacana was military police officer, former councilor, was heard in the Marielle Franco case and cited in investigations as head of a militia.
09/08/2023 – Three men were arrested for robbery after a police chase on Linha Amarela, near the Engenho de Dentro neighborhood, North Zone. Inside the car, police officers found a pistol, two pistol simulacrum, a katana sword and two knives. Backpacks, cell phones and other belongings were also in the vehicle. They are suspected of having stabbed a victim of a robbery in Vargem Grande, West Zone.
09/08/2023 – A police officer reacted to a robbery and injured one of the two criminals in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. According to the Military Police, two men on a motorcycle stole the watch of a man who was in a vehicle on Avenue Sobral Pinto. In sequence, the duo would have tried to steal a car on the same road. At this moment, a police officer reacted by shooting.
12/08/2023 – Civil Police found the body of a 26-year-old teacher who was kidnapped and burned in the Cavalo de Aço community, in Senador Camará, West Zone. The police concluded that the victim’s ex-partner was involved in the crime. She was later arrested. According to the police, the victim was attracted to the community by his ex-girlfriend, where she had her banking account emptied. Her family even paid a ransom demand.
12/08/2023 – A girl and a teenager were shot dead on Ilha do Governador, North Zone. Residents blame military police for the two deaths. The Military Police, on the other hand, claim that the young man shot at the officers and says they do not know how the girl died. The episode began with an attempt to approach two men on a motorcycle leaving a funk party in Morro do Dendê. After the shooting death of one of the occupants, there was a protest – during which the child, who was not in the act, was shot.
13/08/2023 – A group of tourists was robbed at the beginning of the Costão do Pão de Açúcar trail, in Urca, South Zone. The victims were surrendered, at different times, by two men armed with a machete and, after having their belongings taken away, tied. The criminals fled.
14/08/2023 – The owner of a bar in Pechincha, in Jacarepaguá, West Zone, was executed inside his own bar. Around 7:30, armed men got out of a pickup truck and ordered customers “not to get involved”. Criminals went straight to where Bira was and fired. On the run, they still took the merchant’s car.
15/08/2023 – A man was shot on Estrada do Bananal, in Jacarepaguá, West Zone. He was inside his car when he was surrendered by two men on a motorcycle. Police officers from the Jacarepaguá Battalion were called in to check the incident.
18/08/2023 – Three men were arrested by military police in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone, after shooting two airsoft rifles and a paintball gun at employees of a company. One of them had to receive medical attention. With the individuals arrested, two airsoft rifles, a paintball gun and two airsoft rifle magazines were seized.
18/08/2023 – Two people died and three were injured during shootings in communities in Praça Seca, West Zone. The region faces a war between criminals. According to the Military Police, at work to repress the movement of bandits in the woods of the Community of Chacrinha, the troop was received with gunfire and returned the attack. Two rifles were seized. The other shooting took place in the community of Terreirão, in the same region between drug dealers and militiamen.
20/08/2023 – A woman was stabbed during a robbery in Cidade Nova, downtown Rio — a few meters from the administrative headquarters of Rio de Janeiro City Hall. The 24-year-old had just left work and was approached by two men. After injuring her with a knife, the pair fled, taking her belongings.
21/08/2023 – Two employees of a company that provides infrastructure services to Rio de Janeiro City Hall, in the Community of Sandá, Bangu, West Zone, denounced that they were beaten by at least six hooded men. The criminals, according to the victims, are militiamen. The victims said they were at a construction site when they were attacked. A woman, who also works at the site, was spared by the criminals, according to them.
21/08/2023 – A man was shot when he was at a kiosk on Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach, West Zone. According to witnesses, the criminal passed by the kiosk on Lúcio Costa Avenue shooting at the victim. Regulars in the region believe that the attempt murder may be linked to the dispute between militiamen and drug dealers who work on the beach.
23/08/2023 – Actor Alfred Enoch was robbed with his wife on arrival at the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone. The couple was outside the City of Arts when they were attacked. According to the report, a man pulled Enoch’s wife cell phone through the open window.
25/08/2023 – A doorman was killed by a criminal who pretended to be a delivery man to rob a building on Rua Carlos de Carvalho, in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The victim reacted and fought with the criminal but ended up being shot. The crime took place on 7 August and was recorded by security cameras. In the footage, the bandit arrives on a red motorcycle and approaches the gate, carrying a delivery backpack. After a man passes through, the thief secures the gate and gains access to the building. Then he surrenders the doorman at gunpoint. After talking on the phone, he attacks the victim, who then reacts and tries to take the bandit’s gun. The fight lasts a few seconds, until the criminal shoots the doorman, who dies instantly. Afterwards, the criminal takes cell phones and runs away.
26/08/2023 – 34 people were arrested and around 500 people were taken to police stations in the South Zone during DJ Alok’s performance on Copacabana Beach. The suspects were detained for theft and other petty crimes during approaches made by Military Police (PM) teams. At the PM’s blockade points at the entrances to the event, brass knuckles, penknives, scissors, nail clippers, screwdrivers, knife, stiletto, and machete, among others, were seized.
26/08/2023 – Civil Police is investigating the death of three men found in a car on Rua Jaime Marques, in Campinho, West Zone. One of the lines of investigation is that the victims were involved with the region’s militia, and that they would have been ambushed by local drug dealers. They were returning from a party.
30/08/2023 – A 12-year-old boy was shot at Rua Baronesa, in Praça Seca, West Zone. The victim was shot in the leg. According to the corporation, police officers from the Jacarepaguá Battalion were called to check the entry of a victim of a gunshot. The Military Police claims that there was no police operation at the scene at the time the victim was shot.
31/08/2023 – Two women died, and a 7-year-old boy was injured during a shooting at Praça do Alvorada in Santa Cruz, West Zone. According to information from the Military Police, the victims were hit during a clash between militiamen.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
