Barra da Tijuca’s residents, West Zone, complain about frequent robberies. Robberies, especially of cell phones, happen at any time and on busy streets in the neighbourhood. Approaches are usually made by a pair on a motorcycle. The criminal usually asks victims for the password to unlock the device. Data from the Public Security Institute (ISP) show that cell phone robberies have increased by more than 10% in the Barra da Tijuca region.
Rio de Janeiro state government will once again pay a bonus for Civil and Military Police units that achieve strategic goals in the fight against crime. Altogether, 57.106 bonus will be paid to police officers. The Goals System also contemplates the identification and award of good practices.
09/06/2022 – Two women were found burned and beheaded after a fire in a luxury property in Flamengo neighbourhood, South Zone. Two men that worked as painters for the victims were arrested for the crime.

10/06/2022 – Military Police battalions carried out operations in the communities of Jacaré (North Zone), Acari (North Zone), Cinco Bocas (North Zone), Pavão-Pavãozinho (South Zone) and six other favelas in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood (West Zone).
10/06/2022 – Two cars were robbed in Vila Isabel, North Zone. Security camera footage shows the moment a silver car stops in the middle of the street, criminals get out and approach the passengers of two other vehicles. Criminals get into vehicles and drive away.
10/06/2022 – A man who would be a fake app delivery man was killed in Grajaú neighborhood, North Zone. According to a witness, the suspect used a fake pistol and had already attacked three other people. He reportedly tried to approach an off-duty officer who reacted and shot the suspect.
12/06/2022 – A woman was murdered in Santa Cruz, West Zone. The suspect, the victim’s boyfriend, was handed over to the police by his own mother. The family believes that the murder was out of jealousy.
13/06/2022 – The military police carried out operations in several communities in the North Zone. Among them: Cajueiro, Congonha, Faz Quem Quer, Complexo de Israel and Morro do Andaraí.
13/06/2022 – A woman was taken by criminals in a robbery in Vargem Grande neighborhood, West Zone. The criminals called the victim’s husband and forced him to make a PIX of R$ 5.000.
13/06/2022 – A man died after being shot outside a bar in Campo Grande, West Zone. He and his wife, both 28 years old, were leaving the establishment in a car when they were shot after an argument that took place inside.
13/06/2022 – Civil Police arrested the owner and a person in charge of services of a junkyard in Campo Grande, West Zone, during an operation. According to police, the agents found stolen Cedae pieces at the establishment – valued at more than R$ 18.000.
13/06/2022 – Military police managed to free an elderly woman who was held hostage inside Parque Library, downtown. The criminal, who threatened the victim with a knife, was arrested and taken to the police station.
13/06/2022 – Police officers carried out an operation in the communities of Urubu and Engenho da Rainha, North Zone, to try to arrest two suspects in the murder of a Navy sergeant (see last week’s clipping). There was a shooting and two people died, one of the suspects and one accused of involvement in drug trafficking. The second suspect was arrested.
Our analysis:
It is important to note that the operations are intended to arrest criminals or to seize drugs. But also, the mere presence of police officers in a crime-controlled area are enough for a confrontation to take place. When there is an operation happening the risk of being hit by stray bullets increase. That being said, it is important to look for protection in every situation involving shootouts, even shot into the air: once a bullet reaches its apogee it falls and may hurt people in a crowded area. It’s advised to try to locate the source of the shots or confrontation and hide behind a suitable obstacle. And, if possible, leave the area.
14/06/2022 – A housewife was found shot and stabbed in Brás de Pina, North Zone. The family accuses her ex-husband of attempted femicide. The delegate asked for the man’s preventive detention.
15/06/2022 – The police arrested three people identified as members of a gang that steals in the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, South Zone. According to investigations, they pretended to be street vendors to distract victims and steal bank cards to make purchases and withdrawals. Main targets were foreign tourists.
15/06/2022 – A military police officer was shot in the head by another military police officer during a traffic altercation in São Cristóvão, North Zone. The two are assigned to the Botafogo battalion. The officer shot was treated and is under observation.
16/06/2022 – An Italian was arrested by the Federal Police (PF) at Tom Jobim International Airport trying to board with redwood in his suitcase. Export was illegal. He was carrying 70 wooden sticks. 16/06/2022 – The camera of an escort car caught an attempt to steal cargo on Avenida Brasil. The criminals stop a truck in Ramos neighbourhood but end up crashing the cars. In the confusion, they give up taking the truck and end up stealing two guns from the security guards who were escorting the cargo.
