03/03/2024 – A man has been recorded by security cameras spraying the walls of a synagogue in Macuco, East Santos. This is the second synagogue to suffer from acts of vandalism, as the first was in January 2024, in Vila Nova, central area of Santos. Nobody was arrested as the investigations are in progress.

07/03/2024 – A net of 13 security cameras used by gangs were destroyed by the police, in the northwest area of Santos. Indeed, the cameras were monitoring various slum access and controlling the police patrols in these areas. After having investigated, the detectives found the CCTV center in São Vicente and arrested 4 bandits, including the one responsible for the monitoring center who is a fugitive since he did not return from a temporary exit benefit.
09/03/2024 – A police officer was wounded during a shootout in Morro José Menino, South of Santos. Indeed, during a routine patrol in the slum, the officers were targeted by the bandits and replied. An officer was hit in the arm. Due to this, the police intensified her action in the slum and a second shootout occurred, in which a bandit was shot dead.
11/03/2024 – Bandits terrorized passengers and burnt a bus in Areia Branca, West Santos. According to the police, security cameras registered 3 suspects stopping the bus and forcing the passengers to get out of the vehicle. Then, they set fire to the bus. Nobody was hurt. The police are investigating to catch the criminals.
12/03/2024 – Two buses were burnt down, and a driver was injured in Rádio Clube, West Santos. According to the firemen, the injured driver inhaled some smoke and suffered light burns. They also said the drivers used their extinguishers to mitigate the fires. According to the city hall, the police recommended the suspension of some bus lines.
14/03/2024 – Two suspects died in a shootout with the police in Alemoa, West Santos. Indeed, according to the Corporation, a patrol has been targeted by the bandits and replied, killing the 2 men. When checking the corpses, the police found weapons, drugs, and cash. This shootout raised to 47 the number of suspects killed during the 3rd stage of the “Operação Verão”.
15/03/2024 – A man violently tore off a gold necklace on the beachside in Embaré, South Santos. The victim was hanging out when the bandit committed his larceny before running away on a bicycle. A police patrol was passing by at the same time and caught the suspect red-handed. After a quick pursuit, the latter spit the collar in a storm drain when the agents reached him. The R$ 3k necklace was returned to his owner and the bandit was placed in custody.
16/03/2024 – The cadaver of a 25yo man was discovered on the beach in José Menino, South Santos. According to his brother, the victim had been missing since 14/03/2024 and demanded the police to investigate. The brother found the car with its GPS and alleges the police did not submit it to the Forensics. The young victim´s body was discovered on the beach in an advanced stage of decomposition. The case is being investigated as, according to the victim’s family, the first elements do not combine with his habits.
17/03/2024 – A fugitive lawyer was trying to leave Brazil on a cruise ship in Outeirinhos, harbor area of Santos. The man has been running from justice since 2023 for a homicide committed in 2020, for which he has been condemned to 18 years in prison. The fugitive, having also citizenship from Spain, wanted to board a ship to Málaga. The Federal Police caught him on time and went to a custody trial. As he was already under a jail warrant, he followed directly to the penitentiary.
19/03/2024 – K9 teams of the police found a drug warehouse in Caneleiras, South Santos. The operation resulted in the seizure of 80kgs of various drugs and ammunition in an abandoned house. Nobody was arrested.
20/03/2024 – Federal Police (PF) and Receita Federal (Federal Customs) seized more than 40kgs of cocaine in the Harbor of Santos. During an operation with the K9 teams of Customs, the drug was found hidden in the refrigeration system of an orange juice container. The cargo had to be shipped to Sydney (Australia) where the price of the drug is 5 times more expensive than in Europe. The seized drug was estimated to have a market price of R$ 6 million.
21/03/2024 – Former football player Robinho was arrested by the Federal Police in Aparecida, South Santos. The operation was to comply with the decision of the Italian Court of Justice, joined with the Special Federal Court of Justice, to keep the condemned in a Brazilian penitentiary. The former sportsman raped a woman in Italy in 2013 and was condemned to 9 years of prison in 2022.
27/03/2024 – A woman was shot dead during a shootout in Bom Retiro, West Santos. The victim was talking with a friend in a public square when she was shot in the head. According to the Public Security Secretary (SSP), a routine patrol was going to control a suspect motorcycle when the latter shot at them and began the shootout. SSP also declared the bandits fled but left their motorcycle behind. Yet, witnesses told the press that only one shot was heard when the officers arrived on the spot.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of Embaré, Ponto da Praia, Campo Grande, Rádio Clube, Downtown and Estuário.
- Never visit neighborhoods on the hills, such as Morro de São Bento, Jabaquara, Saboo and others.
- The waterfront has many incidents of opportunistic thefts, never display wealth and avoid walks there during the night.
- Residences in the of Pompeia, Gonzaga, Boqueirão, Embaré, Aparecida, Estuário and Ponta da Praia are frequently targeted by thieves. Make sure your building is well protected.
- Be cautious at all times, including in areas perceived as safe.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, mobile phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers if attacked.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as they might be armed or resort to violence.
- In case of kidnapping:
- Cooperate in order to mitigate the risk of violence, and do not lie or provide false information to your kidnappers.
- Bear in mind that the vast majority of kidnappings are financially motivated, and that negotiation may be lengthy.
