Kidnappings and scams through dating apps more than doubled in São Paulo. Data from the São Paulo Public Security Department show that in the first seven months of this year alone, there were 434 incidents, 26% more than in the same period last year, when 343 incidents were recorded. When compared to 2019 – the pre-pandemic year – the increase is 113%, in 2019 there were 204 such occurrences.

17/09/2022 – A man was arrested after a robbery in the campaign committee of state deputy Caio Luz, MDB, in the Ipiranga region, South Zone. According to police, the 27-year-old criminal went to the scene and asked for a job opportunity. As soon as his request was denied, he pulled out a gun and announced the robbery. There were four people on the property. They were surrendered and taken to the back of the residence. The criminal then stole a vehicle with R$58,000 in cash in the trunk. The police were called. There was a chase and the criminal lost control and crashed the car.
19/09/2022 – A man had his motorcycle stolen by two criminals on Corónda Street, Vila Marieta, East Zone. In security camera images, it is possible to see the moment when the man is surrendered and placed on the ground so that one of the suspects can search him for the motorcycle key. Soon after, the other one gets on the victim’s motorcycle and the other follows in the vehicle used to carry out the robbery. According to the victim’s information, both suspects were on a motorcycle when they fired on the corner of the robbery scene. The victim did not know the direction of the shot.
19/09/2022 – An operation in Cracolândia surrounded Helvétia Street to approach dozens of people in the central region of São Paulo. The 22nd stage of Operation Charonte began at 17:00 and arrested nine people and apprehended a teenager. The identification of the targets was made, according to the police, through recorded images. In addition to the arrests, drugs, nine precision scales and objects for drug use were seized.
19/09/2022 – A woman was attacked and choked during a robbery in Vila São Francisco, West Zone. The woman, 26, was returning home with a friend and stopped to talk in front of the building, when six criminals arrived on three motorcycles. She tried to run, but her hair was pulled, she was immobilized with a blow and her purse was stolen.
19/09/2022 – A man was shot and chased by criminals while waiting for his girlfriend to leave the house, in the North Zone. Security cameras caught him when he was approached by two armed criminals. He tried to flee but was chased and shot in the back. The police are investigating the case.
Our analysis:
The general guideline in robberies is not to react, even if you believe that the criminal is not armed. You may be mistaken or be surprised by an accomplice. If possible, avoid sudden movements and try to remain calm. In most cases where the victim reacts – as in the news above – the result is usually the loss of life.
20/09/2022 – Criminals robbed two families who were at the door of a condominium in the Ipiranga neighborhood, South Zone. Security camera footage shows as three armed men approach the families. They surrender them all and then flee with the stolen belongings.
21/09/2022 – Criminals broke into a residence located in the West Zone of São Paulo. They gained access after cloning the garage door remote. The criminals spent nine hours at the residence and stole R$60,000 between jewelry, money and electronic equipment. They also stole two luxury cars.
22/09/2022 – The director of the São Paulo State Traffic Department (Detran-SP) was arrested for a millionaire fraud. A military police officer and three Detran employees were also part of the scheme. They charged money to evade the purchase of driver’s licenses, enable illegal vehicle sales and reduce driver’s license points. The investigation began after an employee realized that her system’s password was used while she was on vacation.
22/09/2022 – A man was robbed by two criminals on a motorcycle on his way home in Butantã, West Zone. The man resisted the robbery and was shot. The criminals managed to escape with the motorcycle.
22/09/2022 – A criminal tried to rob an off-duty police officer on Rebouças Avenue, in the Pinheiros neighborhood, West Zone. The police officer reacted and the robber was shot. According to the police, the criminal had a fake gun.
