05/01/2026 – On Monday (5), the Civil Police launched the first phase of Operation Retention in Morro da Caixa D’Água. During a morning raid near the CEAV school, 166th DP agents arrested a 27-year-old man in possession of a radio transmitter. A second suspect managed to flee the scene, leaving behind a backpack containing 132 capsules of cocaine, 37 crack rocks, and 41 units of marijuana, all branded with the Red Command faction’s labels.

05/01/2026 – On Monday (5), civil police from the 166th DP arrested two men and detained a teenager during a second raid on the Morro da Caixa d’Água. Within five hours of an initial morning arrest, officers returned to a known drug point operated by the Red Command (CV), where the help of specialized K9 Kira was essential in locating 129 units of cocaine, 16 of crack, and 20 of marijuana. The suspects were intercepted while preparing the drugs for sale as part of Operation Retention.
05/01/2026 – On Monday afternoon (5), military police from the undercover unit arrested a 27-year-old drug dealer in the Campo Belo neighborhood. Acting on tips regarding Red Command drug trafficking, officers raided Rua 12 de Outubro, where they seized a bag containing marijuana, cocaine, and 21 packets of skunk abandoned by fleeing suspects. The detainee has prior criminal records for extortion and drug association.
08/01/2026 – On Thursday afternoon (8), military police arrested a 25-year-old woman for drug trafficking during an operation at Morro da Caixa D’Água. Four other individuals were detained as users, and a 14-year-old was apprehended with a radio communicator; all were subsequently released. During the raid in the “Toca da Raposa” area, officers seized communication radios and various quantities of marijuana, cocaine, and “ice.” The suspect was transferred to the prison system the following morning.
09/01/2026 – On Friday (9), military police from the 33rd BPM arrested two men and apprehended a minor during a raid in the Promorar area of the Campo Belo neighborhood. Acting on anonymous tips, officers intercepted a group of suspects on Morro da Lagartixa, an area controlled by the Comando Vermelho. Among those detained was the local “manager” responsible for drug distribution, along with an associate acting as a seller. Police seized significant quantities of narcotics and radio communicators tuned to the gang’s frequency.
13/01/2026 – On Wednesday (13), the City of Angra dos Reis launched “Operation Angra em Ordem” in the Itinga neighborhood to target urban and environmental illegalities. This coordinated action between municipal and state environmental agencies resulted in several construction projects being embargoed and the interdiction of areas encroaching on protected mangroves. Additionally, technical teams from Enel and Saae identified and disconnected clandestine electricity and water connections. The raid was triggered by an anonymous tip, and while suspects fled the scene, one woman was detained for questioning and later released.
21/01/2026 – On Wednesday (21), two homeless men set fire to a bus and a car in separate incidents in downtown Angra dos Reis. Following an investigation by the 166th Police Station led by Chief Roberto Ramos, both suspects were arrested on Thursday (22); one was found carrying a gasoline canister and identified by bus company employees, while the other confessed to torching a car.
21/01/2026 – On Wednesday (21), Civil Police conducted a raid in the Morro da Fortaleza community as part of Operation Retention, dismantling a drug distribution point controlled by the Comando Vermelho. Agents caught a 28-year-old man selling marijuana to a user while a 17-year-old girl managed a table displaying narcotics, including 390 pins of cocaine and 74 portions of marijuana. The man was arrested and the minor apprehended, alongside the seizure of ecstasy, crack, and communication radios.
27/01/2026 – On Tuesday afternoon (27), undercover agents from the 33rd BPM dismantled a local leadership cell of the Comando Vermelho faction in the Morro do Martelo area of Monsuaba. Two suspects were caught in the act of preparing narcotics inside a residence. During the raid, officers seized nearly 2.5 kg of cocaine, a 9mm pistol with a filed-off serial number, ammunition, and various tools used for refining and packaging drugs. One of the individuals already had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and was taken into custody alongside his accomplice.
28/01/2026 – On Wednesday (28), the Civil Police conducted an operation in Morro da Fortaleza, dismantling a “drug delivery” scheme. The 166th DP raid resulted in the arrest of four adults and the apprehension of a minor, including the local drug lord and a motorcyclist caught delivering cocaine to users at Cais de Santa Luzia. In total, officers seized hundreds of cocaine pins, along with marijuana, crack, ecstasy, ether, and radio transmitters.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- Shootouts remain the main risk facing personnel in Angra dos Reis. Several security operations related to drug trafficking are also registered every week.
- If you find yourself in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- lay on the ground and seek a solid cover.
- If you are in your car, the engine block is a good barrier behind which you could seek protection.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from any windows, and do not move until the gunfire has clearly ended.
- Pay attention to the sounds of shots when driving through BR-101, which has on its margins many gang-controlled zones.
- Be cautious when in the vicinity of ‘communities’, particularly: Morro da Fortaleza, Parque Belém, Sapinhatuba I, Sapinhatuba II, Sapinhatuba III, Areal, Parque Mambucaba, Japuíba, Frade, Bracuí, Morro do Santo Antônio, and Morro da Glória I and II.
- Avoid stopping on BR-101 roadside, due to cases of robberies, especially in the most isolated areas and after nightfall.
- Be careful when walking downtown as there is a risk of property crimes, thefts, and robberies.
- Attention to scams that may reach you through a WhatsApp message, e-mail, SMS, or a call.
