Actress Luisa Arraes said on Tuesday (10/03), through social media, that she was the victim of a robbery in the city of São Paulo. In a series of posts on her Instagram stories, the actress reported the incident and warned followers about the growing number of similar crimes in the city. According to her account, she was targeted by criminals using the method known as the “window-breaking gang,” in which thieves smash the window of a vehicle—usually when it is stopped in traffic—and quickly steal the victim’s belongings before fleeing the scene. She did not provide further details about the exact location of the incident but said the experience left her shaken.

Other cases
On February 26, musician Lucas Lima reported that he suffered cuts on his arms, hands, and neck during an attempted robbery while driving to São Paulo International Airport, in Guarulhos, in the Greater São Paulo area. On social media, the former husband of singer Sandy explained that a man approached the vehicle and smashed the side window in an attempt to grab the cell phone he was holding. According to the musician, the action happened quickly while the car was stopped in traffic. He said he noticed the suspect approaching seconds before the impact. The attacker managed to pull the device but failed to take it. When the window shattered, fragments of glass spread inside the vehicle and struck the musician.
The Glass-Breaking Gang
Both artists were victims of what has become popularly known as the “glass-breaking gang,” a group of criminals that mainly operates on some of the busiest roads in São Paulo, such as the Pinheiros and Tietê marginal highways and Avenida 23 de Maio. The method is relatively simple: the criminal identifies a driver or passenger using a cell phone while the vehicle is stopped in traffic. The assailant then uses an object, such as a weapon or a stone, to break the car window and quickly snatch the phone from the victim’s hands.
Assailant Arrested
Shortly after the attempted robbery involving musician Lucas Lima, officers from the State Department of Criminal Investigations (DEIC) arrested a man suspected of using this window-breaking technique to rob a driver on the Pinheiros Marginal Highway, in the southern zone of São Paulo. The suspect was arrested on Friday, February 27, after motorcyclist Thiago Silva de Brito, known on social media as “Valentim, the angel of the asphalt,” posted a video showing two robbers committing the crime.
Operation Broken Window
In October of last year, the São Paulo Civil Police launched Operation Broken Window. During the operation, two suspects believed to be part of a criminal organization specializing in smashing vehicle windows were arrested, while two others remain at large. According to the investigation, after stealing the cell phones, the criminals accessed the victims’ banking applications and carried out financial fraud. The total losses caused by the group exceeded R$924,000, according to the Civil Police.
Analysis:
Recent robberies involving well-known public figures illustrate a broader pattern of opportunistic urban crime that has become increasingly common in São Paulo’s traffic corridors. The method known as window breaking relies on moments of vulnerability created by heavy traffic, where drivers are temporarily immobilized and often distracted by mobile devices. Criminals exploit these predictable conditions to carry out rapid attacks that require little preparation and allow them to escape quickly through nearby streets or on motorcycles. Although the victims in these recent cases are celebrities, the technique primarily targets ordinary commuters who use their phones while waiting in traffic.
The persistence of this tactic reflects the broader evolution of property crime toward targets that combine high resale value with immediate financial potential. Modern smartphones are not only valuable devices but also gateways to banking applications, digital wallets, and personal data.
