RIO DE JANEIRO SECURITY INCIDENTS – APRIL MONTHLY BULLETIN

The first quarter of 2026 saw a dramatic 144% surge in thefts and robberies of electric and hybrid vehicles in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with 366 reported cases. This alarming trend, highlighted by a recent armed robbery in the Maria da Graça neighborhood, North Zone, is driven by the use of these cars as status symbols during funk parties in local communities. Criminal factions now favor these models because they can be recharged within the favelas using illegal power connections, allowing criminals to avoid the risks of refueling at public gas stations.

01/04/2026 – In the early hours of Wednesday (1st), a shootout between police and criminals in the Asa Branca community in Barra Olímpica, Southwest Rio, left two suspects dead and one wounded. Following the incident, protesters set fire to objects and blocked Salvador Allende Avenue, requiring intervention from the crowd control unit (RECOM) to clear the road. At the scene, officers seized two pistols and drugs.
