A TURN TO THE RIGHT – RIGHT WING PARTIES WIN A MAJORITY IN BRAZIL’S FEDERAL ELECTIONS

Brazil’s first-round elections on Sunday (04/10) produced a significant political shift to the right, sending President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) to a second-round runoff on October 25 while substantially strengthening conservative forces in Congress. Flávio finished ahead of Lula in the presidential race, while the PL simultaneously expanded its representation in the Chamber of Deputies and became by far the largest party in the Senate. The results increase pressure on the Supreme Federal Court (STF), reduce the prospects for government-backed labor measures such as ending the 6×1 work schedule, and mean that either presidential winner will govern alongside a substantially more conservative legislature. The elections also took place amid concerns over the political penetration of organized crime, with at least 30 candidates having faced challenges over suspected criminal links.
